repairing holes to a molded polyethylene shack
« on: Nov 27, 2014, 07:13 AM »
Just wondering if one can repair a plastic molded shack. This one blew across a lake and smashed one side pretty bad with a 3 foot long by 1 foot hole missing in front corner going along bench seat side, Just wondering if one could reinforce it to make it strong enough to sit on properly again. thanks for any tips or ideas

I have one of those moulded tub style shaks also have a 2 foot crack from seat corner to top . Tried a two part. Auto epoxy it worked for one year but while loading it slipped and hit ice re cracking my suggestion is plastic weld call Hold On Ind where they are made  best of luck

Any autobody shop can plastic weld. I have a few buds in Saskatoon that own shops if you need a name.

another option would be West System epoxy & some sheet metal. One of the best marine epoxy's out there :icefish:

Sure. A fiberglass repair kit works well. Just don't whack it too hard when cold.

You can even order a plastic welding kit on the internets. I am going to do that for repairing various plasis things that have cracked over time.

Take some aluminum window screen cut it to overlap the cracked area.  Cut up as many milk jugs into strips as you can find about 3 inches wide.  Heat a putty knife over a blow torch till its red hot.  Then work the screen down into the cracked plastic by pressing it with the hot putty knife.  Then melt the milk jug strips over that.  Do both sides if you can, if bonded well it will be stronger than the original.   Another less involved way to fix it would be, take a drill with a small bit and drill a hole every 1/8 inch along both sides of the crack and either stitch with wire or zip ties through the holes, always worked on atv plastics held up for years. Good luck, hope this helps
