Look what you made me do!
« on: Nov 09, 2005, 06:57 AM »
I couldn't stand it any longer, I had to do SOMETHING ice fishing related after reading all of the stuff on here lately (and I'm not going to fish in the toilet)  So I went out and got some bait for my fish tank.  Hope they can hold on till the ice gets thick enough. If not I'll find some use for them.

Holy minnows!!!  Well... I'm sure they'll make it till ice... Hey - if nothing else, when they die out, slap a few on a saltine, little salt and peper, maybe some tobasco - and ya have yourself a readymade cheap snack!!! LOL  ;D

Seeing those pics makes me antsy to se my minnow bucket out on the ice!  Why'd ya have to go and do that??!?!?! ;)

I tried the same thing in a fish tank.....and the smell was NASTY!!!!!!! WIth so many fish you have to constantly change out water, otherwise, their excretions will pollute the water SOOOOOO Bad. No matter how powerful aerator you have.
Good luck with it, but unless I have an outdoor set-up with some good circulation (and no rocks in the bottom) would I do it again.
That smell is bad enough to make me gag as I think about it.

I've kept bait like this for a couple years now and haven't had trouble with them.  I just started a little early this year.

LBD you are bold!  Those things do stink like Mugz said.  They must give off more feces than the average fish?  Take Wuabay's advise and bust out the crackers and tabasco!  You need ice badly :D

I didn't measure, but I'm guessing that its only between two and three cups of bait.

I throw about 4 or 5 dozen crappie minnows in my nephews aquarium every now and then.  All he has in there is one bluegill, it is about 9 inches now, was about 5 when he got it last year.  We tried putting in another bluegill this spring, but it didn't make it, the bigger gill kept attacking it by biting its tail and fins.  Within about 3 days all the minnows are gone.  I put larger shiners in there as well to keep them alive, for some reason my nephew gets attached to the shiners and doesn't like it when he comes home from school and sees the shiners are gone because I took them back out to use for bait.  Last winter I fed the bluegill a lot of spikes, he would come up to the top and take them right out of my hand.  Once he gets a bigger aquarium we are going to try and put in another bluegill of the same size to see if they will get along since one won't be much larger than the other.

This is the bluegill that didn't make it.

Here is the big guy.

Wow, nice photos Crappie. Sunfish usually defend a territory so I feel, that the big guy was just defending his area. If they had a larger tank and the same size all should be fine.
Man those fish are aggressive though, look what they did to that poor guy in the barrel.  ;D ;)

The trick with sunfish is to get a few at the same time and put them in together theyll be used to being near eachother and wont bother eachother much, I have never had too many problems with them beating eachother up, if a sunny has been alone for a while chances are he wont tolerate any other of its kind around.

Thats a nice thank of bait though, how big is it?

What did you use to catch them? Were you able to get them via trap or did you have to net them?

BTW I've found that an aquarium filter with a mixture of charcoal AND the white granular stuff (its for ammonia) really helps. if very crowded, change it every week, keep the water very cold and aerated. They have stones at pet stores that have very fine bubbles. the bubbles from the filter might not be enough. feed very little,..a pinch of food every week or so as much as they can eat in 10 minutes so not to add to the ammonia problem.

That's exactly what I do.  I have the charcoal and the ammonia nutralizer stuff, plus a bubbler.

I netted the minnows near a culvert that they were passing through.  Haven't seen any since the river flodded with all of the rain we got.

I did get 4  ::) in a round trap with the plastic coating one night, but that was it.
