Gamma ESP ice line
« on: Dec 29, 2014, 10:48 AM »
Just wondering about opinions the Gamma ESP ice line. Was looking at trying  either 2# or the 4#  ice blue color. I noticed that there 4# is .006 diameter the same as most other brands 2#.  I used to use stren Hi-Vis gold but they quit making that. Considering Trilene  cold weather or micro ice also?

Trilene XL is a workhorse - works well with just about any knot, though a bit stretchy.  Gamma ESP is a thoroughbred.  Less stretch, great strength for the line diameter (2.5# for 2# class, up to 5# for 4# class), and almost as invisible as fluoro.  Just started using it last year.  It doesn't seem to have any memory problems, either.  Watch out for the knots.  Best knot by far is the palomar for either joining directly to the jig, or making a loop knot.  Improved clinch knot works well, too.  Std clinch and braid knots WILL slip.  A 2-wrap Surgeons knot gives full line strength when joining ESP to your mono filler line.

If you want to stick with mono, sufix ice magic comes in a hi-vis neon orange. I prefer the copolymers like the esp or floro-clear. you can find them here http://sportsmensdirect.com/shop/fishing-line/sufix-ice-magic/

This is my most often utilized line.  I use 2# for pannies and the 4# for a jigging raps and spoons.  I prefer the blue as it's much easier to see against white snow and ice.  I find it to be strong, supple and with low memory.  For a while there you had to order directly from the manufacturer when they went through a change in ownership.  I do tend to prefer mono or co-polymer  lines in most conditions, occasionally I'll use flourocarbon line though.  Not a fan of braided line on ice, especially if not using a shelter.  Some guys will swear that ice line is just re-packaged open water varieties and I think that is generally true, although I can't rule out it's always true.
