I get to answer my own question . Took the family out fishing today and started out going to Dief. There is still open water in front of the turbines along the dam (not a surprise this time of the year) and the ice looked very inconsistent except for the east pump house. Went over to Coteau bay and drilled a few holes just out from the boat launch. The ice was 12" where i drilled the first hole but only about 7" in the second which was drilled about 10' away. We wanted to make a good day of this so it was off to Broderick where I knew we could drive on safely and set up the shack. This turned out to be a good decision. The fishing was fairly steady for the afternoon, nothing big but the fishing was fast enough to keep a person sharp. We had our best luck using jigs with green rubber tails tipped with a minnow . The people about 50 yards from us were using 6" or7" anchovies on tipups. They caught a few very nice size pike and did see more action than we did. All in all a great day to be out.
