Jig pole for lakers
« on: Nov 09, 2014, 04:35 AM »
I'm looking to try jigging for lakers this year. Any ideas on good reel and pole combos? Thanks. Can't wait for hard water.

Need to take a day and go to Sebago Bait shop and see what the Maine pro's use. I need to purchase a set up as well and want to get the right set up. My number one goal this ice season is to find and try fishing Sebago Lake.

In the 80`s we fished Maine for lakers and they didn`t have have the jigs or tackle compared to the bunch from NH I was with.

Take a look at the Black Betty 6061 in line.  Build a jaw jacker too and hook up to an auto jigger then take a nap.

I looked at some nice in-line reels on youtube. the black betty and the eagle claw models. it looks like they don't hold enough line to fish for laker's. 4lb line only gets 45 yds on spool...what type of reels do you use for laker's? I've never fished for laker's through the ice but I am going to give it a try this year. I would think you would need to go deep at times for them....really looking for a good rod & reel setup specifically for laker's.

For those of you who are looking to get set up for rod&reel lakers - Go to AJ's in Meredith. He has everything you will ever need. Be aware of new location in town.

We use 42" Thorne bros graphite rods with Abu Garcia record HC reels loaded with somewhere around a thousand yds of power pro. I don't think there's anything swimming in NH that can spool this setup.

Not sure how deep you plan on fishing but my best luck on big lakers was not deep.

You want a stiffer rod if bouncing off the bottom with a buck tail. A little lighter rod if using PK or other for more action. I agree on depth, caught most my lakers jigging last year in 10-20 feet on rocks!

You really can't go wrong with st croix premier mediums in 28" or 32" length.   I pair them with a 1500 class spinning reel with a good, smooth drag and spool them up with 6lb fireline for deep water, 6lb mono for shallow water.   With that setup I can handle anything any northeast laker can throw my way.

jigging for lakers i like a rod with both feel and strength. I prefer a 3 foot medium heavy rod. you gotta be able to feel the jig bounce and have the strength to set the hook into the rock hard lake trout's jaw.
check out thorne brothers web site for a quality rod. I too have a diawa 3 foot rod that was posted earlier and i love it. For a reel, i use a normal spinning reel and it works fine all winter long
