Dull Augers
« on: Nov 18, 2014, 07:23 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum. I have a manual auger, but the blades are very rusty and dull. By the end of last season I couldn't get through the ic with it. Is there somewhere that sells replacement blades, or somewhere in North East MA that sharpens them?

Thanks, Troy

Local bait shops along with big box stores like Cabelas and Bass Pro sell replacement blades. There's a guy here in MI that sharpens auger blades. If the blades can not be sharpened he will let you know and suggest you buying new ones. http://www.anglerspointmarina.com/Ice_Auger_Services.php

You can bring them to a small engine repair where they sharpen blades or drive to Cabellas or Bass Pro...also on line

There is a genuine skill to sharpening auger blades because of the unique curve and pitch.   Red Rock Store has a sharpening service by mail and they do a great job on my Stikemaster Lazer blades.  They only charge $14.95 per set and that includes return shipping, and they do all types.  Here is their link...   https://www.redrockstore.com/index.php/ice-auger-sharpening-service

TT, if we knew where you're from, it might be easier to refer you to a local place

If they are really rusty you might be better of just buying new ones.

http://www.fish307.com/auger-blade-sharpening-exchange.aspx is a great option, as long as your blades are still able to be sharpened.  You can have them exchanged for a sharpened pair, or have them sharpen your old ones.  Or just buy some new ones like Da Man Cave said.

I get mine sharpened by a local guy (here in Wisconsin) for $20. If they are really rusty, try bead blasting the rust off before having them sharpened...

If the blades are that old and rusty I would replace them. Depending on who makes the auger you should be able to find replacements fairly easy.
FishUSA, Fish307 Kittery Trading or just google your auger make.  Welcome to the site. There is a world of knowledge and info on here. Tight lines

for the gas and time it'll take to find a place and send them thru the mail, it might be quicker and cheaper to just buy or order the blades you need.

I just mailed out two sets of blades yesterday to get sharpened.  Two pairs $29.90.  You pay to ship them out, they pay the return.  Check it out.

I used these guys a few years back. They are located in Nashua N.H. I believe it cost me $10 to sharpen my auger blade. ( www.nesharpening.com)

Saw these listed before, Augersharp Sharpener. Has anyone out there tried one? Looks good for straight blades, how about curved?
