mousees
« on: Nov 17, 2014, 09:11 PM »
I was wondering what makes mousees  such a popular bait? Wouldnt maggots be just as good?

I've never used them, but I think it might have something to do with the tail on a mousees. Be interesting to here what guys have to say about them.

Yep, most place have spikes or wax worms, never actually seen mousees.

I order some every year when I order my spikes and waxies. Not quite as durable but I like having another option when the bite slows.  That tail looks pretty enticing IMO.

Not sure if this helps you out, but I have a pet catfish who gets the spoils of war at the end of every ice season. Last year I had 200 spikes left ans probably about 20 mousees. When I fed them to her in the tank she left all the spikes alone and only ate the mousees. I would be willing to bet they "smell" better to a fish than spikes do.

Actually, spikes and mousees are both maggots. The mousees are of the European Hover fly or Drone Fly. Maybe it's where they come from that gives them the "taste" that fish prefer. Spikes are from flies and they consume rotting flesh and other decomposing proteins while hover flies eat decomposing materials around stagnant water. Maybe the mousees just smell and taste more like what fish figure food should taste like.

The last time I found mousies easily was over 30 yrs ago. I thought the ones we used were a darker color than spikes, and I "thought" they were rather tough....but I can't remember if I was also using spikes. I do believe they were tougher than waxies, however. I googled maggots and found some kind of maggot on there that was a large fly that fed on vegetable matter. They were larger than blue bottles as well. I gave some thought to making a set up as described on there to raise some, but sanity returned quickly, and I decided to just keep financing my current spike producer's vacation to Hawaii each year instead! LOL

Why are mousies so hard to come by? These last couple years they have been gone? They are the best bait, like I will catch 3 fish with mousies to 1 with spikes. With the Demand you would think they would be more available. Good luck and tight lines  :icefish:

They breed heavily in manure holding tanks and stagnant organic materials. I don't particularly enjoy running my hands through any of it lol. Most people probably don't even realize that the tail us actually a breathing tube like a snorkel of sorts. Plenty of plastics with tails to imitate the same thing  mousee  does.

I just did a bait order with knutsons, 1000 extra Brite maggots, 2 packs or mousees, and some preserved wigglers. I ordered the extra Brite maggots last year and couldn't be happier with the quality of them, much better then what I get locally. I got the mousees to compare with maggots since I was ordering and the wigglers I think will work well with trout and panfish.

Reason they are hard to get , they spray those tanks and pits,  to kill the flies!!(mousies)
