Flasher bonkers at night
« on: Feb 18, 2015, 06:13 AM »
Last night was my first night with my vx-1   The bottom five feet was lit up like a christmas tree the entire time.   Bout enough to give u a siezure.  We sent the camera down and saw a ton of little bugs near bottom.    Is this normal.?   I never have an issue like that during daylight.  I couldnt turn down the gain enouhh to get rid of the bugs and still see my jig.   U could see fish still but not ur jig among the noise.   Any advice?    Unit gone wonky?  Just the way it is?    We were the only ones fishing so it coulddnt have been interference.    Thanks guys

Lakes come to life at night. It's common.

some lakes have it all of the time or a few hours before sunset and then all night long. its a good thing to have because fish feed on them. supposed to use narrow beam on sonar. use a bigger jig. add more spikes. make it bigger to see in the mess on screen. its like the movie matrix, you have to learn how to read it. they are plankton. they are found in deeper water say over 15 feet.
my new lx-7 deals with it much better than my ice-55 does. not sure why, but glad to have extra time they don't show up. takes about an extra hour or so before they show on screen on the lx-7. turn your settings as low as you can to try to see your jig, if thats not working use it to see fish only and bump bottom and then count cranks on your reel, each crank is about 1 foot. try 1 to 3 feet off bottom. if you see a fish an dyou think its where you are, just wait for it.

That seems like it makes sense that I'm glad to hear it is a common problem and not an issue with my sonar. It was not a weedy bottom a little bit of Sandy bottom

make your bait bigger and turn the gain down until your bait is just a flicker.  he have a crappie lake that is like this almost every night.

around here we get pods of gizzard shad blow up your flasher at night suspended.

It happens here on certain lakes and usually means good crappie fishing after dark. My LX 5 deals with it not to bad while others have to put there flashers away. I set the sensitivity way down so your the jig just flickers when I jig it, set on narrow beam transducer, super fine line, and zoom the bottom 10 feet. Even if your flasher gets totally blocked out keep fishing old school. I see many people leave when they can't use there flasher anymore, I stay and catch the heck out of the fish.

Oh i definitely wouldnt leave bc of flasher issues.   Just wondering if there was something i could do to mitigatethe noise.   Looks like maybe not seeing my jig but still seeing fish appear as orange or green even might be the best bet.    Otherwise it is too crazy bright in the pop up

I have caught some really big fish near the bottom after I can't see my jig anymore on the flasher because of bottom clutter. That is when a good old spring bobber shines.
