Any fly style reels have a drag??
« on: Nov 12, 2014, 08:11 PM »
I have that black betty fly style reel, I really like how Little line/lurer twist I get... But I hate that there is not a drag.... It has a tension adjust knob but when I keep that loose sometimes while stripping line it will turn by itself and fall off... Luckily I found it each time that happened... Anyone know of a fly style reel that has an actual drag too it like a spinning reel...

I have been using an cheap martin click paw reel for about ten years never had any trouble with the pan fish If the fish is bigger I usually just palm the spool. With my free hand acting as the drag.
Check the Clam models or Frabil I think they have a better system than what your experiencing,I looked at the black bettys too and they look new and improved or modern but they seem to be like some of the scooley reels with that nob that keeps falling off. That can be a pain in cold weather.
Theres alot of options out there now.
Have a safe and productive ice season!

Have never had that problem with my Black Betty reels, I set the reel tension to the minimum I want for pulling line (2#) off the spool and use my fingers on the spool for more drag as needed.

Most of the multiplier types, such as the Eagle Claw, Black Betty 6061, and any of the new models such as the Frabill that came out this year have a free spool and a drag system.

I'm glad this thread just popped up. I'm getting ready to buy 3 or 4 new reels, & was wondering on what to buy. Thanks ;)

Black Betty 6061.
Just bought this one myself yesterday. Seems to have a nice drag. The Eagle Claw inline reel appears to be the same style in pictures and on you tube and has a drag too.

Im getting the new one Black Friday.  My buddy has last years model and it is awesome.  The spool spins like a top and the drag is smooth.  My other buddy has the eagle claw and he had a few problems with it.  The drag was temperamental and the little button on the side fell off a few times and we had to back track on the ice to find it.  The 6061 seems to be a little better constructed.  Not cheap but worth it.

I believe the Eagle Claw inline has a drag on it.  I have one but I've never used it yet.  Pretty sure it has a star drag tension knob on it though for the drag.

yes the eagle claw has a star drag but if you have the drag set low, it is hard to get it set just right for light applications.
