Water on the ice?
« on: Mar 13, 2014, 11:16 AM »
Hello all,

Our group will be on Lake Winnipeg in a week from today (actually will be arriving next Wednesday) and I have a couple of questions regarding recent conditions up there.     I'm sure the ice is still plenty thick, but do you think one extension is enough, should we bring two?   or does it depend where we are fishing.    For those of you who remember, my group is actually fishing the east side of the lake, and are staying in Pine Falls.   If the fishing is slow over there, we will venture to the west side.
How are travel conditions on the lake?   Is it still snowmachine only?   Will quads work?   Will we be fishing in standing water on top of the ice?    I'm just trying to get a handle on the current conditions so we prepare accordingly.

As always, thanks to everyone who replies, we are very excited to do some fishing!

Thanks,
Doug

Bring two extensions, just in case. Sled only, quads mean more digging than fishing. Bring rubber boots. Temps are starting to warm up, snow will be soft.

It's getting warmer. Quads will be hard a lot of digging out ( i wouldn't  try quads ). Snowmobiles are the way to go. And for extensions, 1 is more than enough, but bring 2 just in case. I'm going this Sunday so ya. The magic feet of water is 14 feet Iv been pulling out nice greenbacks, caught at 27 inch 8 pounder a couple of weeks ago.
The curious thing about fishing is that you never want to go home. If you catch anything you can't stop, if you don't catch anything, you hate to leave in case something might bite.

We have been hittin it hard last 2 days at the mouth.....One extension is fine both jiffy and strikemasters.....sled s and tracks only......fishing  is tough.....moved over 20 times today.....didn't do very well at all...tried from 10 to 15 fow.....sounds slow for most everyone.....A few nice ones are still being caught......but very few good reports from everyone we talked to

This time of year we've had the best luck tight to shore, we have fished as little as 3 feet of water below the ice. Just saying

We had a real slow day yesterday as well, I stopped moving after 3 moves as I could see everyone moving and could hear augers running all day, so decided to hold tight as nobody else was catching, we did catch some nice fish, a 26, 27 and 29".  Nice day to be on the lake
