Vexilar and Honda Electronics Co.
« on: Mar 11, 2014, 05:09 PM »
I wonder what the history and working relationship is between Vexilar and Honda Electronics Co.

I stumbled upon some information today that was interesting to me.

It seems Honda Electronics Co holds all of the patents to Vexilar branded flashers.

Here are just a couple of the most recent ones...

Brushless Display on the FLX-28
https://www.google.com/patents/US8644112

Digital Depth / Letter Display on the FLX-28
https://www.google.com/patents/US8553500

If you do a Google patent search with the Assignee as Honda Electronics Co, you'll see what I mean.  It goes back for years and covers just about everything including transducers.

I'm not pretending I just unmasked some kind of cover-up here.  I just wonder how much Vexilar has to do with the development of their flashers.  It seems like they must place a features "wish list" with Honda Electronics and then provide the great support they are known for once the product is here.

Anyone know anything more about their relationship?

My first locator for use on the ice was a Hondex fl8.

Vexilar bought out Hondex in 89.

Many years ago I had a Hondex unit which was very close to the Vexilar Fl-8.

Hey WS, your '89 date seems to make sense but according to Vexilar's website FAQ...

I have a SiTex, Micronar, or Hondex FL-8. Is that your product too?

Vexilar was not involved with the FL-8 before 1990. Any product manufactured under the other names was not made by us, nor did we “buy out” those manufacturers. We can, however, provide parts and service for all of the older FL-8 models.

I'm just wondering how the relationship works.  Maybe the reason Vexilar has such a great reputation for Customer Service is because that's all they do.  Maybe they do no product development at all and simply support Honda products here in the states. I dunno.  That's what I'm wondering.

they say the didn't "buy out" Hondex, but I've got to be honest, their old Fl-8 certainly looks almost EXACTLY like a Vexilar FL-8

(Image removed from quote.)
Honda Electronics (Hondex) still makes every unit that Vexilar sells.  Vexilar is just a company name here in the USA.   Vexilar sells Hondex flashers with the Vexilar name on them.
Hondex also makes 3 color flashers for other companies that are much nicer quality than the Vexilar units.  Aluminum housings, better electronics, better looking but a bit more money.
I'm trying to get a couple of these units imported right now.  They'll be eye openers if I can get them ! ;)
