It has been painfully slow from what I have been hearing.  Where are you going?

yeah, downhill seems to be the way it is going.  I think Bakers closed also so far this year.  Good news is we have tons of ice and it should be -10 or so tonight.

on the lake this past weekend we had 18" solid ice and 15" on top that you could stand on.  I've got a video of my buddy just about burying the engine before the auger popped through.

I did bakers with poor results. It was slow last year as well. I'm gonna head up to adirondacks for them next weekend. I usually do ok with them there. My best spot was on Nickerson Lake up in maine but it is a long haul. Iced 300 in an afternoon.

Dank knows how to fish!!!!

Thanks, we really had a great day. most of the perch come from having sonar which makes things much easier.  I just found out how good the whites taste, I might be moving away from trout altogether.

sorry to hear the poor smelting conditions, hopefully the populations will rebound in the future.

fish fry batter on the whites out on the ice. I make beer batter when I get home and have a real kitchen for the rest of those fillets.  poached the Brown in white wine, lemon and garlic and served it with cream cheese on crackers.  the smallmouth are plentiful and wormy usually. Once we found them and had those few we were tossing them back left and right, we throw most bass back for the summer anglers to enjoy.  Those three and the "slime darts" will go to lobster bait for the summer. one of my fishing buddies has his residential license so the turnaround into free lobster is worth the trade off.
I have tried smallies before and have made pickerel chowder but wasn't overly impressed with either fish.

On a guided trip in Maine I tried smallmouth. It was fried with some Cajun spices on it. I thought it was excellent.

very cool, they are everywhere here.  The river near my house has piles of smallies and big ones also. I target them in the warmer months when I am not out fly fishing for trout or salmon.  I used to pick up some pretty good smallmouth out of the Scituate Res growing up, they get nice and healthy sized in there.

no worries, I got caught by every agency patrolling those waters growing up.  I even gave them my real name most of the time. I was in my teens and it was in my town. I felt that we had a right to use it.  It has been a few years since I've been in there  :P ;D :woot:

I use to stay at South Branch Lake Camp in Howland Maine. Nice 3-4 lb fish in the lake. Cabin right on the lake. Sweet set up. I miss those days. Also, we would fish the Penobscott River. That was a whole other situation. Had to watch your self while wading or in a boat.
