Spinning reel suggestions?
« on: Feb 15, 2014, 08:45 PM »
Hello I got two fenwick aetos rods today at 70percent off for $15 each and I need some reels for them.  I don't want to spend a ton of money but don't want more junky reels like the ones that come with all my cheap $25 combos.  I have two eagle claw inline reels and loved them but one already broke so not getting another one of those.  What would you recommend for a decent spinning reel?  The rods are medium light and I will mostly use them for walleyes and perch.  Along with the occasional gills and crappie.

I use my summer reel for ice fishing, all Shimano. Just buy the best model you can afford and you will be set for years. Even there low end are better than most other brand mid range reels...

Phlueger President, will run you 50$ and they are a nice reel for the money.  The Trion is a bit less money, but I don't have experience with them.

I 2nd the Sienna.  I have a 500 spooled with 3lb test and have caught many accidental bass, catfish and even a 30" pike.  Great reel for the money.  I also have a Daiwa, Abu Garcia, Shakespeare, and Cabelas.  Definately like the Sienna the best.

I have 3 Daiwa Crossfires.  Two of them are the old style that came with a spare spool.  One is the new style.  I've had good luck with them and recommend them in the under $30 price range.  Remember, they are $30 reels.  The drags are not equivalent to a $200 Shimano Stradic, but they've handled lake trout to 27" without issue.

In the $40 -50 range, I don't think you can do better than the Shimano Sonora or Sedona.  If I ever get around to getting a custom ice rod, I'd match one of those reels with it.

Shimano's r awesome, silky smooth drag.  You wont be disappointed.  Have some sedonas for ice fishing, about $55 each.

X3 if I needed another spinning reel I'd buy a 6920x; very slim, precise reel.

i have 2 sienna 500s and 3 quantum optix no complaints about any of these reels. Of course i always tear down and lube with frabill subzero before the reel ever touches the rod.

Last month, I ordered an HT Accucast 4bb reel from Fish USA. I've used it a few times and must say that I really like it. I've used it out in some pretty cold temps and have not had any issues. I got it on sale with free shipping so I figured I wouldn't be out much if I didn't like it. If I have need for another spinning reel for ice fishing I will more than likely get another.
