You can target them anywhere.   ;D

The key is in the catching.  That is more difficult and is what I think you are really asking.

I'll send you a PM.

I can tell you that I saw thousands of them on my sonar at Brownlee last week.  Most of them were small and getting a bite was fairly difficult.  There was plenty of ice from Morgan Creek going north.

Marked fish on the sonar anywhere from 10 FOW to 50+ FOW.  They will not be hard to find.  Don't know how to make them bite.  In a whole day we got 1 keeper between 3 of us.  Worm and jig, or a small piece of cutbait and jig would get a few very light bites.  I wish I could tell you more.

If you get some smaller ones, I'd put some cutbait down near the bottom for a catfish or 2 as well.  They were good strong fighters and fun to catch.  Some folks even know how to cook it and make it taste good.  I just can't seem to get that part right myself.

hooknhunter, thanks for the info! Sounds like it is worth a try if the ice is still holding. You think with this rain and warm weather that the ice at Brownlee would still be fishable?

How much ice were you guys fishing on?

thanks again.

I would be extremely surprised if it was not fishable for at least 2 more weeks, but if the river rises due to the warming weather and the rain, then who knows.  We were on about 10 inches of ice.

To consistently catch crappie through the ice you need a flasher ( crappie suspend )   I have found that moving your jig in a real tight shaking motion will get there attention. The colors white and blue seem to work the best for me.

They are real tough to get to bite.  I'd reccomend 4 lb test and small jigs tipped with bait.  I use crawlers.  I wouldn't get a bite without my sonar screen and I have been using a tent in this bad weather.  I got another slab today ;D

Yup ......micro jigs. I have had very good luck with he smallest Jigging Rap also. Look for in coming creeks. Once I could see bottom and the crappie swim by, back when anything under 12" you threw back.

Sory thats my own term I guess. Its a very small hook with a thin white body down the shank and small white wings protruding from the body I put a very small glow in the dark beed on the line to rest against the hook and act as a head jig this with a light shaking motion and occasional pauses just on the edge of the light from a fishlight or lantern if the fish approach but don't bite they probly want it to smell good so I tip with a power bait crappie nible waxworm or maggot. This has always worked well for me at brownlee
