Today's catch
« on: Dec 15, 2005, 08:49 PM »
;D Snuck out to my secret res. today for about 3 hours of fishing, around 3 to 4 inches of ice, only about 15 yards out from shore. The perch were caught on tip-ups with minnows and jigging with spikes.

A dozen tasty perch for the fryer, tartar or c**ktail? ;D ;D ;D
Tight lines to all, stay on top.

;D Conroy's in Waterveliet, I got it 3 years ago. I stopped there today and picked up 5 dozen minnows, some spikes, some mousies, some new jigging spoons, and a couple of pole holders for the shanty. He has a couple large, a couple medium, and a couple small in the shop plus various shappell shantys, augers, anything you need he's got.  ;D

i fish with a few [ i call them purists ] perch fishers that only keep quote the larger ones. then after we start to clean the days catch, they start cutting the fillets into smaller pieces. yeah  i asked them the same q, and none of the answers made any sense either. it all comes down to is 1 mans keepers are another mans bait. those 8 in perch[ if you know how to use a fillet knife] are one of the best eatin fish anytime but doubly so through the ice.

I have to laugh when I see guys jump all over someone because they are keeping small perch. I know a guy who will occasionally keep them 3 inches if that's all the day gives him. Makes the best darn fish chowder you've ever had with the little things. Too many of us are too quick to condemn without knowing the facts.

JerryofWNY, I'm with you on that one. I know a guy that makes perch chowder and anything else he has to throw in the kettle and it is awseome. I'm not one for keeping the tasty LITTLE critters( 3"-7") as i like the taste of a nice JUMBO just the same ;D. hookedonice, I know i've eaten plenty of smelt that way in my days but never a perch. Don't have any problem's with the bones of a smelt when done that way, but I don't know about a perch? I'd be worried about the bones in those there small perch. Stay on top, utes
