Shad.
« on: Feb 13, 2014, 08:51 AM »
One local lake I've been fishing has a healthy shad population,so much it makes using a fish finder nearly worthless.I spent much time jigging and switching baits only to find out it was shad.Couple of questions, are shad catchable ?( other than a net) and are they tasty? I couldn't get even a nibble when trying to catch them, they would follow my lure, then drop away,I finally shut off the marcum to save the battery.

That is just why I bought a camera.

If I used a flasher it would drive me nuts with all the dink blue gills we have in the lake, now. We had a terrible pike die off a couple of years ago so the predator populations down so the dink bluegill population has exploded.

With the camera I can tell what is actually down there

I don't know if I would catch them and eat them...they feed on all the little invertebrates in the water and all the extra junk in the water. I use them for bait for cats and they are slimy, gooey little things. Theres a lake around me that has so many of them that they've keep the ice thin or even open water.  I don't know if I would recommend eating them unless you are going to grind them up into a patty because they have a bunch of little bones.
