What's your live bait?
« on: Jan 23, 2014, 03:13 PM »
What live bait do you use for your fish? (shiner, herring, fathead, suckers, wax worm, meal worm, mousie, spikes, crawlers, trout worms)
I use under tip ups
fatheads - perch crappie trout
shiners- bass and pike
herring for large trout and bass
trout worms - trout
Jigging
meal worm for bass
spikes for bass

I was using medium roaches for bass and pike, but now I catch a bunch of 2 to 3in bluegill. The fish love 'em and they're free.

If I was made of money I'd buy the biggest sucker they had every time but unfortunately I end up buying two dozen fatheads for tipping jigs and perch tip ups while I use small perch and gills for the bigger stuff.

I'm luck there is a local pond that has shiner, fatheads, and small perch. Free bait! Some huge slime darts in there two.

Jigging: butter worms (aka honey worms) for everything. They tend to survive better than waxies and fish love the fat ol' things

Large shiners or pike shiners, for tipups. That's what the call theme down here. Usually something around 3 or 4" long, other wise the start to get expensive.

Is there a difference in shiners mentioned? I do much better with golden shiners. They are much fatter and the real large ones are the best (10"). Setting the flag so it won't be a false alarm is a must.
Fat heads for perch.
We let the fish go and my Dad told me I had a wish. I wished the fish would live.

I have a small beaver pond across from my house and it has shiners, red belly dace, mummy chubs.  I keep my bait in a pail in the stream that comes out of the pond, it stays open and keeps the bait perfect.

When I'm in New Hampshire, smelt and then tip-up suckers.

Massachusetts and Rhode Island, I like medium and large shiners.

My preferred method is jigging though. Nothing better to me.
Marking anything?
