Clam Nanook Reveiw
« on: Dec 17, 2013, 08:17 PM »
Just got my new Clam Nanook out fishing for the fist time . Figured I would let guys know what I think of it .
1. Assembly : went well . Took my time , nice warm room , preheated the canvas to sled seal .
2. Hardware :I would like to see stainless nuts and bolts . I will let you know how they hold up .
3. Canvas : Not bad , it still gets some condensation but just adjust the air vents or door zipper .
4. Seats : Went with mods found on the Old Trick My Trap thread and moved the seat outboard a few inches . They fold flat to fit under my truck cover . VERY comfy .
5. Sled : Medium weight plastic . I will add runners .
Pulls easy , I can load and unload by myself . So far 8 out of 10 score .
Hope this helps , I will add more as the season goes .Jake

I bought one last year and am really happy with it.  I only installed one of the two seats, easy enough to bolt in the other, in order to have more room.  I can haul a bunch of gear in it with only the one seat.  I am going to put skis on the bottom eventually to keep wear and tear to minimum, sled is not heavy duty plastic.

Held up really well on a two day trip with rain/ice/sleet mix, kept me warm and generally dry.

thanks for taking the time and sharing the info!
they are nice to have for many reasons, no mater what brand you buy

another thread in general chit chat about the tent shrinking and lifting the front bar off of the ice about 4" and clam saying its supposed to do that when you ask why its doing it
http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=268631.0

most of us suggest to use weights on the front bar and/or stretcher bars between each support bar to try to stretch the fabric full time. you can make your own like i did for my shappell

get it wet and use your heater in it while stretching it back out to dry

Have had it out a few more times . Changed out the pull rope to a longer rope . Ordered the travel cover from Reed's . Have the center console 90% done . So far I would say it is worth every dollar I have spent on it FYI $299.00 on sale in August at Gander MTN. Had no other issues . Going to head out next week for a 12-18hrs trip and will see how it goes .

Carpet on ready to go in !! Hold spare battery , propane tank , and all the junk (I mean necessary equipment ) . The cup holders double as bait puck holders . Battery runs my  12v outlet that also has 2 USB charging ports . I can also charge the battery and showdown en-route and after fishing with my trucks inverter through this . LED lights are wired also to this , yet to be delivered and installed . Cover also came in 100% fit , should be in the box with the shanty when you buy it .

Just wait until you pull it in the snow. Hardest pulling SOB I have ever seen. Even empty it pulls like crap once you get 6"+ of snow. On bare ice or a little snow it pulls like a dream, but in the thick snow it plows.

That's a really nice build and mod for the Nanook.

Out today for 8 hrs set up in 0 to 10F and a wind-chill around -10 .
The good : Buddy heater on low kept me fishing in a sweatshirt , wind was not a issue with no flapping of the canvas . Very comfy with just me , I can stretch out and relax . Ice to canvas sealed up well with a little snow . No hardware issues , no zipper problems .
The bad : With me burning propane and as cold as it was , there was condensation on the canvas . It froze to it , and was not a big deal . Ever shanty I have owned did the same .
FYI : Smitty sled is the way to go with the Nanook .

A very long day on the ice .
Good: The seats , stayed warm with a buddy heater at 5-10 above and 10-15mph winds , roomy enough for two adults to fish all day .
Bad : Needs better anchor points .
All and all ranked it as a 8 out of 10 . Hope this helps anyone looking at the current Clam Nanook to purchase . Should Clam change a few things , to make me happy , yes , but that does not fit all .
Be safe .

I,m on my fourth year. With mine. I put conduit runners on mine, works great. I did not bolt my seats in and I only use one. They work great outside too.I have two plastic tubs that fit so the seat goes over them. They hold all that I need and also use as a table.mine does not get babied. It's been banged around pretty good from time to time.ya, it would be nice if it was a little lighter, but I like the room in it. I do use a quad to pull it when ice is good. I will unhook it and it pulls ok from hole to hole.I am very happy with it.do recommend if you are going to pull it by hand, do not use a rope. I made a pull bar out of conduit. More steady and makes it much easier to handle.
