Lantern Boxes
« on: Dec 30, 2013, 04:10 PM »
Id like to either build or purchase a lantern box for jigging.  If anyone has plans, or links for one for sale, Id be very interested in them.

Thanks

This is mine. It is 10x24 overall. The seat opens up towards the back and the front upper area opens towards the front. I split a bucket caddy and attached to the sides, but I am going to remove that soon and find a different solution. Any questions, or if you want more pictures just ask.

Bottom Rails 1 1/4"  square tube

Where I keep bait, flashlight, tools.

Under the seat, where I put caught fish.

Lantern area, also notice the cut out surrounded with black, that is the "handle" to lift and carry. Best feature if you ask me.

Plexiglas is 9"x9"

Wow, that is exactly what Im looking for.  Thank you.  How much does it weigh unloaded?  Did you make it yourself?  What gauge metal is it?

Im definitely saving those pictures.  Ill have to make one out of wood as I dont have access to sheet metal like that.

It is made out of aluminum, I did not make it, I received as a gift, but I plan on making another that is 12" or 14" wide. It weighs 10 pounds with the bucket caddy, according to my bathroom scale. 19 gauge aluminum (.036")

Sorry it took so long, had to find a scale and calipers to weigh and figure out the gauge.

It wasn't bought in a shop I don't believe. Built in a garage somewhere. I am going to make a few and sell them someday, but it probably won't be until end of summer at the earliest. Thanks, I'm pretty fond of my "box" too lmao

It's amazing these "Lantern Boxes" were so popular in Michigan and dates back many years.  My father-in-law built one back in the mid '50's, and left it for me, when he moved to the shanty in the shy. It awaits me in the basement, over in Ypsi.   ;)2

They were selling for sixty something, and built locally by a retired guy in his garage.

They make sense to me. Lightweight, carries almost everything you could want, lantern keep your hands warm and provides light. What's not to love?? I really only use it on first and last ice. When it is colder or more snow I use my shanty, or a jet sled. But I am mentally designing a lantern box that will be ready for next season.

I'm watching for it Allen and I'm on here almost year round.

The only one I've seen has a few small holes in the seat, warms the backside, ha.  The one you've shown has good features !
