Finally, some fishable ice
« on: Dec 06, 2005, 11:48 AM »
Joco, it's time.  You can tell by the pics where I am.  Earliest December I've ever made it out... showed up at 8:30am to find Bradford whacking the shoreline ice with a log :)   I stuck around just long enough for him to grab a rope and his floater suit and head out... first test hole drilled... 3.5"... definitely fishable so I drove home grabbed the floater suit and a couple rods...

When I got back I followed Brad's sled trail, passing all the test holes he drilled along the way...

Wasn't long before we located pannies on our flashers... on went the Marmooska jig and Lindy tail, started nailing them.  Second fish was a nice 12.25"...

Caught about a dozen between 8-12" in the two hours I fished.  Not one 'gill which I found surprising.  And I caught a bonus toothy on the little Marmooska when I decided to put the rod down and drill a few other holes further out.  Brad saved the rod from going in and we pulled up this nice pike on the panfish popper rod.

Can't wait to head back out.

Hey you sickly guys :)... no need to waste a day's wages, the ice is here to stay I think.  Plenty of time to get out in the coming weeks.  I must stress if you do go out on ice that's this thin make sure you have a floater suit on and fish with a buddy.  Nobody wants to be a statistic, especially during the Xmas season.

Stay warm, stay safe, tight lines...

Slipbob, I just started using one this year.  While they may not be a priority for fishing on 12" of ice or more, they are indispensible for early and late ice.  They're very warm and many folks around here use them for fall musky fishing as well.  If you're gonna be towing hardware around the river in November you might as well be warm doing it!

Tight lines!

Nice pics bucketmouth and a nice crappie, you guys are real smart wearing the float suits.  I need to get one of those soon.

Great Pics Bucket mouth.

You certainly have made me jealous. I won't be out for a while yet although the temps have been nice and cold here. If this keeps up perhaps I will have some of my own pics to post soon!!

Hey Bucket,

Is that a new piece of electronic hardware also for you this year? I didn't recall seeing you with a flasher last year! Looks like you are all set and loaded for bear this year. Congrats on being the first to get out on the ice...I wished I was with you. I thank the ice gods for the fun I'm about to receive this year!

Wow Ransome it looks like the icefishing bug has really bitten you also! I remember you last year as being pretty new to the sport. Now you are hopelessly addicted like us....and I guarantee you won't regret it! I look forward to bumping into you and Tony again this year.

Cheers,

Buckski, Canadian Tire is starting to carry them, 'bout $329 CDN if I remember correctly.  Check their website to be sure.  Not familiar with any other stores down that way, perhaps BPS in Vaughan carries them?
