Rainbow in the cold
« on: Jan 04, 2014, 04:21 PM »
Made it out at first light this morning. Temp read -17 in my truck on the way to the ice. That's the coldest I can ever remember seeing. It wasn't a very good start. Loaded up and headed out with a stop for gas/coffee first. Apparently my tailgate wasn't completely shut, for I had to pick my jet sled off of the road after it slid out when the tailgate fell down on a corner. Now a stop for gas. Reach for my wallet, no wallet. Back to the house to retrieve said wallet. LOL. Back for gas/coffee, and one more stop for bait/propane. Get to my spot around 630. So damn cold the auger won't fire. So out with the chisel. Open up a couple holes and traps in the water. One hit and spit on a smelt right off. My buddy shows and gets his traps in. We set up the shanty and get some heat going. About 830 he gets a flag, and misses what he says is a good fish at the hole. No more action until 200, when I land this beauty. She went about 17 3/4 inches and about 3 lbs a nice fatty. A good day despite the cold. Venison sausage on the grill for breakfast.

Well it did have my auger, bait bucket, chisel, and seat pail in it. But the cover was on it and it managed to stay pretty much in tact lol. Luckily, my pack basket with traps and jig poles was riding comfortably in the shotgun seat to stay warm :)
