lattiude longatude how to read?
« on: Mar 02, 2014, 02:59 PM »
I would like to learn how to read longitude and latitude but don't know where to get help on this. The internet really hasn't helped much. Im getting a smart phone soon and want to get the navonics chips so I can get up dated with the times. Any suggestions on who to start calling on this?? How did you guys learn?? Thank you

Longitude is your distance from the prime meridian which is 0 degrees in Greenwich England. It starts at zero there and goes up to 180 the further you head west.

Latitude is your distance from the equator. The equator starts at zero, as you walk north, it goes up. If you get to the North Pole you hit 90 degrees north.

NYS is roughly 75W and 44N

I'm just guessing those coordinates. I don't use gps. I'm just recalling my days of teaching earth science in summer school

Latitude - Lat is like fat, its horizontal, and steps up and down like a ladder.

The Navionics is really simple, dont get stressed.  Im 'directionally challenged', and even I can figure it out!  BTW, my smart phone is waaaay smarter than me!

Latitude lines run east and west and are parallel across the earth's surface so think of them as the rungs of a ladder (as in "ladder"-tude).
Think of lines of longitude that stretch from the North Pole to the South Pole as "long."

A degree of latitude is a  distance of sixty nautical miles, six thousand feet. A second of latitude is one nautical mile. At the equator. As you move North or south from the equator the distances shrink for longitude since the circles become smaller. In our area it is greater than a half mile for a second. When you hear anglers talking of middle numbers for their location, you can figure they are in a half mile square area that should put you in their sight but not too significant to send everyone to your spot. I may have mixed up the lat/long circles but you can get the idea to use it here. When you are looking for the place where the numbers given, you have to figure north or south, east or west before you head to the spot or area given. just punching in the numbers and go to will not help if you do not have the complete number of the spot. Most captains only give out the middle numbers to prevent a horde of boats descending there.
You can not take too many perch, unless you can not clean them, give them to your friends and neighbors to clean and cook. The more perch you take, the faster and bigger the rest  will grow. The walleyes and bass will survive from fry to fingerlings.

Thought my explanation was simple enough for a beginner to understand. You guys are just making it more confusing talking about the lines and what they mean. The lines are kind of irrelevant for a GPS user

Just read my first post if you don't want to get confused

Ummmm have you paid any attention at stores lately?
The next generation can't make change without a computer telling them what it is.
When I get gas, I walk in and grab soda, snack, whatever, wait till they ring it up.  Then buy the gas that'll fit in the tank & make it an even dollar amount.
Like its $3.73 so I ask for $56.26 in gas.  They look at me like I have 3 heads. The stores I stop t a lot, they giggle like its funny and say "you're the math guy"......
Not that aj is young or dumb, but our society is becoming to reliant on computers.
I remember when cashiers had prices memorized and had to type in every price and could do math in their head.
Perhaps the question was trying to understand GPS & not follow the little line or arrow?
Heck although they shut it down a couple years ago I still have a LORAN for the boat, and can read a compass, chart, and plot speed and direction.
Perhaps "smart" stuff is making us dumb.

Very simple when dealing with a gps. Now if you wanna plot out lat and longs on a topo map that's a little different story.
