Saying Hello
« on: Dec 15, 2013, 02:31 PM »
Just wanted to introduce myself and say hello as a new member of the NH community.

"Reel Nurse" and myself are moving to Enfield, NH officially this week although our lease started there on the first of the month.

We are just a minute from Mascoma lake so we are looking forward to exploring that area, and beyond!

I have been studying the regulation book and gazzetter for over a month now and I have two questions-

1-Is it only designated Trout/Salmon lakes in which you cannot fish for trout from 2 hours after sunset until 1 hour before sunrise or is that all lakes? (Here in VT I love fishing from them at night)

2- Is the use of a submergable light legal? We use a green Hydro-Glo here to fish for smelt and some other species at night. If not what do the smelt fisherman use?

I look forward to hearing from you all and getting to know you and catch up with some of you on the ice!!!

Tight Lines!

Welcome to NH VTPIKE.The question to the first question is All lakes and ponds.1 hr. before sunrise,2 hrs after sunset. That is the legal fishing time for trout.I cannot answer the second one.Have you ever fished Lake ST. Catherine?I got the green light to go there to ice fish when it opens and would like to ask you a couple questions if you don't mind?

Welcome to NH, During open water jack lighting is illegal I would assume it is during the ice season too but I'm not positive.

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

Welcome to NH VT Pike!

Here is a quick link that will answer your questions.

#1 NO Trout (Lake Trout, Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout) shall be taken between two hours after sunset and one hour before sunrise.
Salmon are illegal to take through the ice or open water after September 30th until April 1

Other fish such as cusk or crappie are/can be fished for at night.

#2 •Except as otherwise specifically permitted, it is unlawful to use or have in possession a set line, net, fishing otter, trawl, grapple, spear, jack, jack light, poisons, explosives or electrical device or any other device for killing or stunning fish.

Welcome VT Pike! I grew up in VT and ice fished on the big lake. The rules are very different in NH!

Man just had a flash back of jigging for smelt in VT, good times!!

Most of the smelt fishing around here is done on the tidal rivers I believe I tried it for a few years and realized it wasn't my cup of tea haven't been in a few years now. I enjoy being on the lakes/ponds for bass/ trout so much more. I did go to a small pond up north and out of about 12 guys out there in the middle I was the only one fishing for trout they were all jigging smelt they said. That was the first and last time I have seen anyone in the freshwater fishing for smelt.

I know some guys who jig for them at night on some small lakes / ponds.  I used to jig for them in the daytime on Lake Sunapee and did well, but seemed to die out since I noticed rock bass in the lake. When I was jigging for them during daylight hours I was in 70' of water, when they disappeared I would throw a jig down and usually get action on lakers, cusk and salmon.

Some great lakes and ponds in that area. NH has a lot regulations for ice fishing, I would spend some time reading the rules. Good luck post reports and pictures

Welcome to NH, neighbor. I'm not far from Enfield myself, but have never fished Mascoma. You also have Crystal Lake and Goose Pond nearby. Crystal has trout, but Goose is warm water only, I believe.

Sometimes rules and regs can be unclear in the book; feel free to ask questions and keep out of trouble!  ;)

Welcome.  I grew up in the area you just moved to.  Nice country and great deer hunting.  I'm familiar with all the waters listed and know them well.  PM me if you have any questions.

Last time I was fishing for lakers and an old timer came up to me and started chatting. He just about fell over when he saw I was using smelt for bait. Said to me, "Man, there ain't nothing you gonna catch that is better eating than those smelts!" Made me chuckle.

Welcome!

Oh yeah, a bonus I just thought of! Bear Pond Bait is in Canaan, and he delivers bait (or he did a couple of years ago) right to the lake on weekend mornings. 304-7355.

Welcome, I live next to Mascoma and there are definitely lots of quality places to go within 15-20 mins depending on what you are targeting.  Mascoma has a little of everything, crappie, smelt, yp, wp, smallies, pickeral, browns, bows.  You can buy bait from Hans(bearpond) or from Upper Valley Outfitters in Lebanon.  Feel free to PM for any info.
