Rigging tip ups for toothy critters
« on: Jan 19, 2014, 08:19 PM »
Hi gang, Im sure this has been discussed but I thought I would share what I have had success with and ask what works for those of you who fish for gators. I don't use steel leaders when fishing for muskies with tip ups just plain old 20# mono leaders. I have pulled in many muskies north and south of 40" with just the mono with not one bite off. Using mono wasn't really the plan at first. At first I started using tip ups for bass and what ever else was swimming below not even considering catching muskies but that what I was catching. I was using 20# mono because its just what I had laying around. So what do you guys use? To wire or not to wire?

Thanks in advance

Tim

The only Muskie I caught that was 44" and 28lbs came off of a 8lb fluorocarbon leader and a small shiner while the other 4 tip ups were rigged with steel leader and large shiners... never had a problem catching pike and pickerel on steel but only targeted muskies a handful of times so I can not give any info on that..... Personally I don't think it makes a difference unless the water is crystal clear just my opinion

You should take a look at the tip-up thread. There is some real good info there.
