Eagle Claw Inline
« on: Sep 27, 2013, 08:57 AM »
I am looking at the Eagle Claw inline for a new rod that I am building, the one thing I cannot tell and I haven't seen it listed anywhere.  Is it an ambidextrous reel or is it only a left or right hand retrieve?

It can be reversed. Read this review to find out how!

I talked to them last seaon and gave them advice on some things to change. One of hem being a longer reel seat leg so guys can hold there rods with a pencil grip. I am curious to see if they changed it up for this year

FYI - I just bought one yesterday at BPS and am returning it already. They have two models now. I bought the all black one (22 bucks). It came in a plastic reel package instead of a box like the models last year (both new models come like that now). Neither look the same as last years model. The other model was 40 bucks and had a pink arbor.

I'm returning it mostly because the reel foot doesnt fit in the rod I had bought it for. I tried it another rod without the seat and tested out the drag, it was quite difficult to set at an acceptable level, it also wasn't very smooth. I'm going to visually check the other reel model to see if the foot is thinner, and may try that one out.
I love my job, it pays for my bait.

Got a couple of these the other day, they look nice and seem smooth enough, I'm sure it will be a challenge getting the hang of them, i just keep telling myself i didn't learn a baitcaster in a day, hopefully the learning curve will be short. the price was right, less then 20 delivered to the door. i spooled one up and hung a small jig on it and you really have to watch the spool when the jig bottoms out, it just keeps spinning the line off i wish it had magnetic brakes instead of the friction knob. I'm really looking forward to no more line twist and less jig spin.

If your a sportsman guide member there under 20.
You really have to search the site for them, the combos are a little more.
There usually is a free shipping promotion.
Now the combos and the tony roach model are back ordered but should be available before the ice shows up

I used one all of last season.....really liked it and it held up well.  My only complaint is, if you use the pencil grip...a few times I would have a fish on and while reeling, the inside edge of the spool is exposed...and my palm would hit that stopping the spool from spinning.  That would then cause me to reel the spool loose.  Kind of tough to explain but would happen more often than I liked.  But....overall for the $, it does pretty well...

FWIW - I bought one for a fenwick elite tech and the reel foot didn't fit in the seat on the rod. The upgraded version uses the same body and reel foot. I bought the frail 261 and it fits in the fenwick. I figured I'd put it out there in case any of you were purchasing online for one of these rods.
I love my job, it pays for my bait.

They feel very cheap and work about the same.  I had 2 out of 3 fail on me in 3 outings before I completely gave up on them.  The spool would randomly free spool on hook sets causing lots of cursing and missed fish.

I was very happy with mine and pulled a ton of crappie, perch and trout on it last winter. I got mine in a combo from fish307 and left it on the cold smoke rod. No issues or complaints

I have a question on this, I just set mine up. I have the frabill 241 series also and on this eagle claw I notice the spool reels the opposite direction. The line is at the top realing towards you. The frabills is at the bottom realing away from you. Is this right?

I have the Eagle Claw premier version and absolutely love it. It will free spool a 32 oz jig without a problem. I did not adjust the free spool tension but used my finger to feather the drop. I can see my spinning reels being replaced in the future.

I think he means 1/32 oz. A 32 oz jig would be for knocking them in the head.  ::)

i know but i couldn't resist. Now that this topic has been brought up from the depths of the nether-regions I will say now that I have had mine on the ice for a few times and figured out how to switch it from a left handed to right handed and got it set correctly, I am liking it for gills and crappies.  I haven't had it on perch much yet this year and probably won't but we will see.

Ordered two of them. when I opened them it was easy to realize one of them was not assembled right.(little gold gear and bushing in the spool itself). Well after throwing a fit for a few minutes, I was able to get it put together correctly. That being said, Used them for the first time today and love them! Drag isn't perfect, but isn't a problem for gils/crappie/perch.

i bought 2 and used them 3 times. first 2 times was super windy and out side and couldn't judge them yet. last time in my shack i got a grip on them and don't like them as well as spinning reels at all.
the line falls much slower because the entire spool has to spin. so the weight of the jig is trying to turn the big spool to let line out. on spinning reels there is no restriction. it just slides over the tiny lip of the spool.
so the speed is no where near the same and not worth the fuss.
no one can convince me that other brand in-lines will allow jigs to fall faster than free falling spinning reels. the spool becomes a governor.
some of these truths show here on IS as some will tell you how many feet of water they use them in, such as 15FOW or what ever.
some will say i can control the drop to stop just before it gets to the fish. wow, so does any reel.

also, the drag system is no where close to being quality. it has one telfon disc and one metal disc, not layered disc system like what i use. so it gets hung up and you have to play with it to start working again, just like you do to get the line started. reaching over the pole and pulling line is not what i signed up for, or at least so i was told i wouldn't have to do and i was told they are as fast or faster at letting line out than spinning reels. the drag really is a drag to use and it is all over the board trying to find the tension it wants for your amount of drag on your line.

the aluminum spooled reel, i bought one in hopes it was built better, but is is not. same exact thing other than the spool. was hoping the spool would help with the uneven weight problem in-lines have because of all the metal parts on the one side. it was a bigger disappointment and not worth the extra cash at all.

filling parts with vaseline should be the first clue as to what to expect from them. whole sale is only 15$, so its bottom of the barrel equipment. so needing to fix that problem out of the box is not cool either. most will just use it as is because its easier and will buy another when it starts binding

now comes the line twist talk. i watch my baits drop and come back up, they spin no matter what reels i use. thats because the spike on the tiny jig makes it spin and there is nothing that will stop that. this is my primary bait i drop and i only target pan fish.
so why bother with all the in-line reels stop line twist hype. its bs talk.

personally, i wish i had my money back!

if you haven't bought any yet, i say do not. buy some thing else if you need to spend.

Here is my review and take on them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT-akIZe-PY

I've caught close to 100 trout on the Eagle Claw inline (grey) one and I liked it so much I purchased the Tony Roach Premium Inline (black with Red aluminum spool). I put them on my St. Croix Legend ice rods and they are my go-to light biting setups. As others have said, they can be a snug fit if your rod has a reel seat but mine fit in the St. Croix reel seat. Most of my rods have the cork handles and no reel seat so it wouldn't be a problem there either. Check out that video to see them in action.
