tricking out my shanty??
« on: Nov 18, 2005, 01:41 PM »
I'm going to build a collapsible portable shanty and I need some ideas to trick it out with nice features.

I'm going to add folding shelves, cup holders and a platform for electronics.  I'm also going to cut some walleye designs out on the ban saw to add to the outside.

I also have a shed antler that will make a nice door handle, but I want to make this shanty really, really neat.

What are some cool ideas you guys have used?

This topic is very common in the ice fishing world and it is endless to what you want in a shanty.  A good place to find info i have found is using the search tool on here and to also use google.com images for tons of unique ideas.  Have fun building and remember to vent the shanty good.

Don't forget the mini-disco ball, the cd player with mini speakers and mini- sub-wolfer, fur lined seat(s) chrome skis, make sure it is a low riding shanty, paint it purple with a big green stripe going around it.

My version of tricking something out is to use as many colors of duck tape as possible.  Have you guys seen that duck tape come is 12" side by 25' rolls now, oh my you could have some fun with that.  :P

Don't forget forget the pontoons in case of thin ice and a hot air balloon to get back off of it. In case you didn't notice, the rest of us could help you fill the balloon. It's all in fun and you took it well.

I take my laptop out with me quite often and use a wireless satellite uplink courtesy of the university.  I think I actually posteed a couple of reports last year on iceshanty while I was out on the ice.  That would be a nice addition.  Also you might want to consider portable satellite radio, either XM or Sirius radio.  Delphi makes a few small portable satellite radio systems, I think it's called the sky-Fi or My-Fi...can't remember but I've got one for the boat and my shanty

Definitely don't forget to add windows at your seating level.  You may also want to add some type of pockets or something to hold loose ends like jigs, lighters, mantles, etc (we did and they were used every time we went out).  The addition of the rope lighting is cool, it looks festive and throws a decent lumen output vs the battery consumption.  Other things like surrounds(that slide down below the hole in the floor and sit on the ice) for your fishing holes to prevent a lot of airflow when the holes are open and rod holders if you intend to dead stick or use a bobber (Billditrite has a cool idea under the 'Maine' thread with the 'Crappie Shack 2006" heading).  Also, put a small piece of wood around the outside edge of the floor to prevent chairs from sliding off of the floor and through whatever you use for walls(we used a heavy tarp and put a chair leg through it by accident).  A thermometer is always a good idea, not that it matters, but I like to know the temperature outside.  I'll post more if anything else comes to mind.  Tight lines.
