Perch lures and/or bait
« on: Dec 20, 2013, 01:23 PM »
I'm new to chasing perch and would like some input on what you guys use for your "go to" when it comes to targeting them.  I've tried unsuccessfully with eyes but that was likely at the wrong time.  Anyways just would appreciate some tips and tricks to help me out over the Christmas break

perch eyes are the best bait i find...usually takes me a while to get the first one on a minnow head or maggot then once i can pop an eye out they start biting good.  going out now to try and find some!

as for hooks i like hawger spoons, forage minnows or jammin jigs crippled willow spoon.

Micro jigs and power bait grubs seem to produce more perch for me than anything else. But minnows, perch eyes, maggots and meal worms all work.

I like spoons and raps tipped with minnow heads, wigglers or eyes. I seldom drop down to ice jigs or flies because I'm normally fishing deeper than 30 feet for them.

Perch are my fav fish to catch through the ice. PK spoons flutterfish Hali jigs buckshot spoons hawger jigawhoppers darters genz worms and lindy fat boys all work. So do swedish pimples, flasher jigs and kastmasters. For bait perch eyes are always good. minnow heads work good esp later in feb when the perch are puking up mostly minnows.
The biggest thing is to be active drilling holes until you find an aggressive school.
When the perch are there but not biting its time to try different things. Hali with chain droppers and mousies or waxworms. Buckshot spoons with a 6 inch fluoro dropper and a genz bug will sometimes net you a double. Fish two holes close together with a lindy darter to bring them in for a look and something smaller to seal the deal. I've had days when plastics outproduce live baits. Try different things like adding beads or small willow leaf blades to your fav pech spoons.

I personally like using small pk spoons, small buckshots and small jig-a-whopper tipped with minnow heads or perch eyes!
