Reel to grip methods
« on: Dec 08, 2013, 06:39 PM »
Looking for an option for attaching my reel to grip. I tried both castration rings and electrical tape, didnt really like either. The rings just felt wierd and the tape just left a sticky goo on the cork when I took it off. I like the tape on method, but I curious is there some other form a tape that works well without leaving the sticky goo. I would like to get something local not wanting to order anything. Thanks

I use hockey tape. I like the cloth feel better than electrical tape. If you are worried about stickyness, maybe prewrap the cork with blue masking tape then tape over with something stronger
If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull$#!+

High quality electrical tape doesn't have anywhere near the problems that the thick dollar store type cheap stuff does. Color coding line weights on the reel is easy with the variety available

I use the Frabill reel tape, it only sticks to itself.

If you are putting another reel on in the same position then it shouldn't be an issue.

If you are changing the position then it could be an issue.

Not something I have ever worried about. I just match the position and taping when removing and replacing.

Silicone self-fusing tape has been a popular option for securing reels. No sticky residue

I use the heavy duty wire ties with no problem for years. Easy to change reel (snip off) and put on the new toy. Have a good year.  STEVE

I pre-wrap with blue painters tape, then tape over that with electrical.  Works great and you probably already have what you need.

Check out Tommy Tape. It's a tape that only sticks to itself. I've been using it on my rods the past two seasons. Solid way to attach a reel with no adhesive sticking to the cork.

You can see in the pic below I use rubber bands to hold the reel while taping. That rod has two rubber bands on it because I didn't know if I was gonna like that reel on that rod. However, when mounting a reel with Tommy Tape I will rubber band the back of the reel, and tape the front first. Then remove the rubber band and tape the back. Very simple process! I cut a piece about 8" and pull tightly as I wrap it around. Might be able to get away with less, and create less bulk. Very solid hold though.

If you first take a piece of electrical tape and wrap it backwards and then tape normal it sticks to itself and not the cork. Take a look at the thorne bros site that is where I found the tip.

If you are worried about tape residue then duct tape is definitely a no-go.

Never heard it called Tommy tape, but I got the same stuff at Menards, about four bucks a roll. Wont come loose unless you cut it off.
