Pro 4 Oil change
« on: Dec 28, 2013, 12:19 PM »
Just changed the oil in my Jiffy Pro 4. Noted it recommends "change the engine oil  before the start of each season" in the owners manual.

I know I put the full 6 oz. bottle in last year and never topped it up...

As normal, I started it up for a minute or two so the oil would flow out better. When finished draining the crankcase, I had 7 oz of gray oil in my measuring cup. I took a few drops on an old license plate and put a torch under it, as expected all the water quickly boiled off leaving a nice clear oil behind...Have to admit I was surprised at how much condensation could build up over the course of the season but the quick heat and cool down must really be an issue. I will be monitoring the oil much more closely this season and for certain will be changing it prior to summer storage.

Exactly. Same reason short hops in winter are murder on your car/truck oil.

As a life long mechanic, shop owner and being into Amsoil since 1972, that's exactly the way I've always done it too. What's not to like about instant starts and many thousands of miles between changes ?   The pour point is 58 degrees below zero.   I have just two things to say.  Why not?   ;)2

I store it in the cold garage during the season but put it down the basement for the summer.

Basement for the summer? Usually humid down there unless you have a dehumidifier, might be better off in the garage for the summer. Just a thought.
