6 vs 7 and Lazer vs. Mora
« on: Dec 15, 2013, 09:39 PM »
This isn't a, "hey guys, what should I get?" thread.  This is a 1) I'm really stupid and 2) I'm kinda sorta glad just this once perhaps that I'm stupid thread.

1) Here's the stupid part.  A guy should check the connection between his hand auger (7" Mora) handle and the "business end" every time he goes out, right?  I don't know about all of you, but I didn't check that connection - it seemed good yesterday.  So why is the business end of my auger at the bottom of the lake today?  Because I'm stupid, that's why.

2) So, when I started ice fishing a few years ago, a 7" Mora seemed like a good choice.  However, in the time from then to now, I have thought that perhaps I don't need 7 inches of diameter.  I'm not a weight lifter, but I'm not completely out of shape either and drilling a handful of holes was leaving me pretty gassed and in need of recovery time.  With the 7" Mora at the bottom of a lake, I took hold of the opportunity to pick up a 6" Lazer.

I really was not prepared for the amount of difference.  I'm not sure if more of the difference comes from the smaller diameter or the different cutting head, but my goodness is the 6" Lazer easier to drill with.  The Mora wasn't dull, but I don't even think I could cut half as fast with it (if it were still on the right side of the ice).

So...in summary, a bad day and a good day on the ice.

the same thing happened to me a few years ago only with my gas auger apparently i didnt push the quick connect  sleeve up high enough on the pin  its a terrible feeling watching the auger spiral down the hole   after 2 hours of wondering how im gonna get it back i went to harbor freight and bought a big magnet   they got one about the size of a red brick with an eyelet bolt on it    i tried picking up a huge pipe wrench the next aisle over and it did it no problem    went back out to the hole thinking this is a shot in hell but we'll give it a try   so i tie rope on drop it down the hole and clink got it the first time  i was so freakin lucky  i pulled it up then reached down and grabbed it  and pulled it out of hole  by hand  so you to can catch an auger if you use a magnet for bait good luck

I may try that, but I like the new Lazer so much better that the Mora will be a backup or sold.  I did mark the "uh-oh" spot, though.

I've Always Used An 8In But After Seeing Another Guy Use A 6In Because If The Hook Pops Out Or The Line Breaks When They Are In The Hole They Can't Turn Around So The Only Way To Go Is Up.  I Think Im Going To Go Get A 6
