Insulated hub houses warmer?
« on: Dec 09, 2013, 06:20 AM »
I've been fishing in uninsulated hub houses for 8-9 yrs and my most used house is getting thread bare (bad for dark-housing) and tired and a seam blew out that I sewed back together. So are the insulated models worth the extra bulk and cost (not much difference); will I use less propane; any draw backs to insulated houses. I don't like burning any more fuel than I have to. The insulated houses also look darker (Eskimo Fat Fish at least) too, which would be better for me since I dark-house fish the majority of the time. Thoughts please.

Very good questions.  I also would like to hear from those that have one as i have a few more questions

What's the R -Value when a window is open for fresh air at all times?
Do they fold up just as good when they are frozen as an un insulated one ?
I see Wholesale sports has a tent where only the roof is insulated ,might not be a heavy.

I just got an Eskimo Fatfish 949i and can tell you when you close the doors and windows in it it's pitch black inside and the material seems pretty durable and reasonably thick.  I can't say any much more since I haven't fished with it yet but I think you'd burn less fuel and it would break the wind a lot better due to the insulation and thicker material.

I just used my Eskimo 949i for the first time Friday after purchasing it two years ago. I'm sorry to report I blasphemed and didn't fish hard water for that timeframe. While it is heavy and barely fits in my accent as well as its own storage bag, I'd have to say its well worth the hastle. Once I make a jig so I can strap it down and pull it on my sled ill be set. It broke the wind great, the anchors were more than easy to put in, and I was down to a t-shirt with bare fingers while the little buddy heater was going. If I left to go after a flag and I turned the heater off it was comfortable when I returned. I can't offer a fair comparison as I've only fished in one other regular popup, however I'm quite happy with the purchase.

I have the eskimo fatfish949i. I love it! it is very dark if you close up the windows. last year I used it, it was -14 and the wind was terrible. I had my mr buddy heater  running and I was down to just my long sleeve t-shirt. I would run the heater for 15-20 mins and shut it down for about 30-45 mins. I spent about 10hrs out that day and I used 1 full bottle and maybe a half of another one. the only cons are when folding it up to put in the case its kind of a pain! that's the only downside to the whole shelter though. If I were you I wouldn't get an unisulated model, spend the extra money! also get a fan/light combo. mine is the clam version. cheap and it hangs on the top of shelter. good enough light when needed and it keeps the air moving. well worth the $15
