Ice in Omaha
« on: Dec 09, 2013, 08:52 AM »
Went out to Walnut yesterday afternoon.  Ice was 3 inches on the edge and got down to about 2-2.5" about 50 yards from the bank.  Went to Youngman and found 3.5 to 4" and caught about 10 bass and 1 catfish in a short amount of time.  Swedish pimples with waxies was the trick.  If you've never been to Youngman, all the bass are 14" so we didn't catch anything of size but it was still a good first day on the ice.  The catfish was too big to pull thru the hole.  Haven't heard anything yet for Standing Bear but we're planning on gettin on Bear and Walnut this weekend.
I thought I had the catch of a lifetime...then I threw her back so I could spend more time fishing  ;)

Must have been a big cat!!!  Have seen an 18lb cat come through a 8 inch hole, about like pulling a cork out of a wine bottle.

It was definitely a big cat.  I talked to a couple guys that were out on the ice with us and they were catching quite a few catfish, using jigs with waxies with 4 of them around the 10-15lb mark.  They were set up on the northern end in 20 FOW.  The key yesterday was to set up over the creek channel that runs through the lake.  It's a narrow channel on the south side but opens up wider on the northern end.  We were on the southern end with 8 FOW that dropped down to 15 feet when over the channel.  Youngman is a small lake but like I said...for the first time out on the ice...it was just good to have tight lines!

Nice!  Sounds like a good day on the ice.  Let us know how Wehrspann turns out and how the ice is.  Good luck!

Fished Wherspann Sunday morning.  Geese holding some water open, much of the lake was sketchy, and we were limited on where we could go.

Parts that iced over first had 5 inches, 2-3 in many areas away from the coves/shore.

The usual, short crappie, gills, bass.  It was just good to get out.

Fished Standing Bear this afternoon for about 4hrs. Anywhere from 3-6" of ice depending on location . Very slow action suspened minnows and jigged small spoons, skandis,  and pimples. Managed tiny yellow bass hybrids only, saw no trout/crappie. suspect thier holding on the inclines closer  to the dam. If you venture out steer clear of the springs on the south central part of lake as those are the thinnest areas. Over all felt pretty safe others I talked to said same slow action thus far.

Appreciate the update.  It'll be interesting how the ice holds up this week.  We should have a colder day tomorrow but then we'll a couple 30+days with sun then back to possible some flurries this weekend.
