November Cutthroats...through the ice!
« on: Nov 10, 2013, 11:53 PM »
I was lucky enough to be able to get out on the ice here today. Nate (Bigassbassman) and I were able to drive up the 4x4 trail a ways and made it to about 1/2 mile from the lake and finished off the hike from there. We punched holes and found varied thicknesses of ice (ranging between 3" and 5") so we punched a handful of holes and started fishing. It wasn't long until we both had Cutthroats on the ice! Warm temperatures and blue bird skies led to a beautiful day to be in the high country where we each brought about 25 trout to hand (85% of them were Cutthroats - the others being Rainbows).

Here is a video of our adventure today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Pc4U0EOqqY

I am jealous.  Still going to be awhile before I can get on some ice.  Nice looking fish.

Gorgeous!!! Just out of curiosity, do you usually have ice this early? Or are you ahead of schedule? Hoping some of that ice locking cold will float on over us here in upstate NY..

This is pretty normal for the high country here in Colorado -- Mitch also posted about his trip on the ice in October!  I guess if you really tried and didn't mind hikes to the higher-elevation lakes, you could ice fish Colorado from late October to early May each year.  6-7 months of solid ice.  :)

Like Nate said, it's pretty normal for a handful of people to ice fish in October in Colorado. You are able to go up into the mountains and go up in elevation, and find some fishable ice. It's still not easy but very possible here - if you're willing to hike in a bit. It'll be around Thanksgiving or beginning of December for most of the lower elevation and big lakes to freeze up. Can't wait!

We were able to take my 4X4 to about 1/2 mile of the target lake so it wasn't too bad of a hike in at all!

Thanks, Kev -- yeah, the hike wasn't too bad, but I think I slowed Mitch down quite a bit.  ::)
It sure was great to explore a new lake for both of us!

Some of our high lakes are hard already too..... I'm hoping the cold snap this week will start icing the lower elevation ones.
