Who's gonna be out for the opener Sunday?

I am excited to say I'll be headed out spearing on the opener this year! Although not much for depth, the canal next to my house gets decent pike in it even though it's only 2ft deep. The gills and shiners like to pile in it with pike coming in and feeding on them. 2.5" of ice currently on the canal. Will be out at first light Sunday morning! Got a stainless steel homemade spear that was given to me over the summer, hopefully I can put some use to it.

As much as I'd like to, spearing will have to wait until later in December when the snow gets too deep in the woods to let the dogs effectively chase grouse.

I may just get out!  Sat on 3 + inches of ice this am after panfish.  My garage is a mess now!  Still full of deer hunting stuff, and now ice fishing stuff is coming out.  No down time with this years transition!  I'm torn though, because there is still a month to chase deer.  Guess I need to fill my last doe and buck tags quick so I can focus on fish .

I have the same problem plus two bird dogs that normally get to chase grouse for the next month

I've made the decision that I will bird hunt until there's too much snow to get in the woods or the season ends. In the meantime, I will have all of my spearing gear ready knowing that I may be hunting one day and spearing the next.

If I didn't have dogs? I'd be headed north and/or west to me on solid ice!

Gonna deer hunt tomorrow morning again. And a good deer drive on a private tract to follow. Sunday morning, regardless of deer tags filled or not, I'll be out on the ice waiting for a Northern to come in to Jason's dekes. I have 3 options for setting up. None are really amazing structure or depth but all will have a pike cruising through eventually. And yes, I know what you mean about the garage. I have duck stuff, deer, ice fishing, and steelhead stuff thrown about in an unorganized mess. Hahahaha.  Plus we are painted and prepping the babies room so yeah, it's bad! Too many things collided together this year.

I am hoping that I will have enough ice by Sunday I had 4 1/2'' last Wednesday and I need 6 1/2 to pull out the dark house but it has been cold this week. I am going out in the morning to check the ice. Opener in northern MN was the 15th of November so I have been chomping on the bit.

Well today was a bust. Found great ice, 4" to 5". Setup in two different locations with only small perch spotted in the first. We did pull in a 22" on a tip up we set at the second d location. Things started getting soft around noon so we packed it in. Now the wait for cold again!!

I'm still working on decoy and spear orders. figured I should get orders done now and be ready when its colder out!

So I took the portable out Sunday for a couple of hours. No pike on the hole but it was nice to be watching Norwegian TV again. Solid 7" of ice on the lake so by next weekend the permanent will be going out. I did have a bunch of 10-15 LB carp swimming through the hole.
