Jacked!
« on: Oct 04, 2013, 10:15 AM »
Ordered 2x JawJackers from Cabela's for a specific application

Last year, there were some days - that felt like weeks - when fishing was downright tough.
With a 2-rod limit - spreading poles out, far apart, was the only way to try and get on the fish.
Then, trying to get to the rods in time w/o spooking the trout in shallow water was a challenge.
It was hard enough to draw them in and then the sound of a full-on run across the ice would
send them packing once again into hiding.  Why the running?  They were one hit wonders -
you'd get one strike and that was it!  If you weren't there in a flash --> fuhgeddaaboutit

What specific 1> successes and 2> challenges have you had w/them?

Friend in Denver got one for Christmas last year. It did catch one fish at Antero for him. He let his friend pull the fish in since they were in the process of packing it in for the day. It was the only fish they caught that day.

sounds like another one of those tough days...  and when you drive 180 miles round trip in an 8 Cyl. truck thru the mountains + bait, lunch - that one fish @ 2lbs comes out to $20/lb.   a ton of fun of course, but pricey good fun

I've had times where I'm outside the hub on a nice Colo. day and assisting a bud w/hoisting a large trout or pike and your line goes off ONCE; only once and you can't get to it  grrrr

I have thought about picking one of these up to use as a second rod.

I like the idea of having it there, but has anyone ever had any problems with the rod wanting to into the water?

I would assume that if you put your drag on light, so it would let the fish run, you might run into a rats nest on an open face.

The guide I spoke w/left his drag on at his typical setting and sad he's never had a pole taken in.  I personally use ice screws with 6' of para cord tied around the base of my pole + looped around the reel strut.  It has saved me a few different times thus far.

Personally, I have no use for them.  To me, they're just a gimmick.

But they do work and if you have it close to your other jigging pole you have the best dead stick going.

I like to have a dead stick close to where I am jigging. A lot of times I get just as many hits on the dead stick.

You'll find a use for em! I have 2 as well and last year was my first year for them. Set one up close to where you're jigging and it'll work just like a dead stick - but it'll set the hook for ya. Great for troutin'!

I bought one last year, and although it didn't always get a hit, there were days when I ONLY caught with it.  I'm buying a second one for this season.  Once I learned to adjust the tension correctly, even soft hits were enough to hook them.

Steven, I don't use them because it omits that human element of setting the hook, but last year was the first year I fished for pike using a tip-up. I didn't think that was going to be much fun but it was a gas pulling in a pike by hand.
I had quite a few flags with no fish on. I thought maybe small pike but when resetting the line I noticed some big trout
chasing the dead sucker. A few years ago a friend caught a six pound bow on a tip-up with a sucker. If we were able to use more rods than two I would deadstick for trout with a sucker in addition to tip-ups for pike and jigging for trout. The beauty of your rig is the trout may not have a chance to drop it once it feels the quick-rig. Also at a place like the
Mile the stockers that they have been putting in during winter will leave it alone because it would be too big. Just my
2 cents. Maybe I'll see you and Stewart this year. Tight lines, Mark.

I agree with coboy...it takes away the "human element". I used to fish tip-ups back East for pickerel. At the time it was fun sitting on my cousin's porch looking out over the pond waiting to see a flag, and then running out onto the ice to reel in a toothy critter. I guess now that I'm MUCH older, the experience isn't so much the catching as it is the peace and solitude I get when I'm out on the ice. I usually C&R anyway, so I guess having a device setting the hook just doesn't hold that much appeal for me. But...to each their own. Hope to meet up with some of you out on the hard water. Just look for the OG with the "geriatric sled"! Good Fishing!
