Best portable shack........
« on: Sep 03, 2013, 03:32 PM »
I know it's still only September, but I'm on the hunt for a new shack. Never used a flip-over style before, coming from a Old Hecco 2 man to a quick fish 3 and just sold the quick fish 4 before the move. Time to find something new! I have been looking at a sled one but really am open to suggestions. Being back in MN opens a whole new world. I would like to think I would fish pretty much everyday after work. Let me know your opinions!
Thanks
Woody

I love my clam one man kenai. Very light am easy to pull. They have a few other one man models plus for multiple anglers. There shantys are the best in my opinion.

I have a 2 man flip over clam that's great. I would strongly recommend a flip over. A friend of mine has a frabbill that is nice too. I really don't like the briefcase ice house. Seems like there is always ice in the hinges and the ground is never flat enough. I'm also from MN

I own an older X2, and a Kenai  , Otter is an excellent choice , just make sure which ever one you buy get a set of runners to save the tub i burn up a set a season and a half and the old X2 tub is like new , if you don't have a machine a smitty sled will come in handy just an ol buzzards .02

I like my Frabill 2 man flip. It is plenty of room form 2 and with an extra chair I have even fished 3 out of it. The seats it comes with are a little heavy but that is the only downside I have found it to have.

Since your on the road you able to visit a sporting goods store and tire kick some models? ....it seems to be a lota lil things between makes and models that turn you on or off.....sled size sled weight and center height are 3 right off the bat ....bench seats ....stadium seats ect .....the new models aren't even out yet for purchase ...don't want to get buyers remorse if you buy to early and without checking them out for yourself.      http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=259932.0  check out earlier posts with new product catalog

Personally, I own a clam nanook thermal, but I have a couple things that i'd change about it. First of all, I wish the poles were more heavy duty! They're 3/4th inch round aluminium pipe. I believe that otter has 7/8th sq tubing? That sounds much more durable to me! And after one season where I fished in 30+ mph winds, my poles are starting to bend.. Just my experience I guess. Otherwise, I love the fish house!

I am in the same boat this year, I am looking for a new flip over and am having a hard time deciding between the Otter Lodge and the Frabill Ambush DLX.  No one has them out yet around here and I want to be able to check them out before I decide.

Lots of good ones on the market. Many of the choices are governed by budget. If a person finds a way to afford a higher end house, in my opinion, Otter is a great choice.

Woody,
I have the Frabill Preditor Thermal 2 man. The thing I really like about it is that when I decide to move on the ice, I just take out the two vertical poles and I have a rope tied to the top which I use to tie up the base beam. Makes for an easy set up and move. Curently I am out of town for work but when I get home I will posts some pics with the mods I have done to mine.

I like my clam explorer it has 27' fish able space and 2 comfortable seats and plent of storage and 1 1/4" poles but not the fastest to move because of extending the poles to move but I like the setup
Never to many short poles

I have two. One is an original gentz fish trap from the late 80's and the other is a shappell rover. They are both very similar in design but i tend to like the shappell just because its a little bigger and pulls better. These are my first flip overs and i love them i am now hunting for a two man.

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

Different strokes for different folks.  One size does not fit all.  If I were you, I would take everyone's opinion, then I would look at different makes, and models, and see which one best met my needs, and budget.  Buying on someone else's opinion, without checking it out for yourself is like going on a blind date.  Once in a while you find a good fit, but mostly you end up with regret.  JMO.

X2----Just remember that opinions are like @$$holes, everyone has one!! Time to get out and put on some miles looking around at set up floor models! Just remember that you will be wearing winter clothing and that you will have a bunch of gear with you!! Multiply that by however many you will be in the shack with! Another thing is how are you getting it out on the ice?? Pulling by hand, or sled/atv? Weight becomes an issue when you are pulling by hand!! A lot of things to consider when shopping around!! Good luck!!  :icefish:

Thermal ambush is what I am leaning towards. How much of a difference does the "thermal" make? I plan on using my big buddy if I have to anyway.
