They are all a big help. ....   you will see a million different opinions and many people are very biased toward their own product but any flasher will help you catch more fish  ;D

I have had a Lowrance x67C and a Vexilar FL18 ......    i use the lowrance as a backup and the vex is my go to unit and it rocks.

Just be careful to get one that works on the depths you fish ... for example the Vex FL22 is only good to 60 feet or so .... which doesn't help if you are targeting lake trout in 100' of water.

There are some great deals this time of year .... but if you are not in a big hurry i always suggest to people that they go to a very crowded water body and wander around and get a good first hand look at the different units in use ..... most people are happy to show you and that way you see them in action and can make an informed decision.

But ...  definitely buy one  ;)

They will increase your catch rate for certain ....check the equipment board/threads on this site as well as you tube and manufacturer sites for video... lotsa information to absorb and appreciate . Some have more bells and whistle than others but basically all work the same . I'd recommend a case/cover for transport. Some have digital readout ..which is quite a nice touch.... Oh they will change the way you fish ...should you stay or go ...ul'll know with a flasher

I think it depends on what you want to spend and what features you would like. I got a Marcum vx-1 pro last year and it works great. just wished I had a duel beam it would come in handy when fishing deep water.

Two years ago I was in the same boat as you are trying to figure out what one to get.  In the end I chose a Showdown Dual Beam and couldn't be happier.  It's very simple to use and figure out.  I like the fact that the display resembles the water column you're looking at, the top is top and bottom is bottom.  I'd definitely buy it again and highly recommend it to everyone.

What advantage does a duel beam unit have over a single beam,  is only better for deeper water.  I fish on lakes with a max depth of 20 feet.

well duel beam allows you to go to switch to narrow beam. So if you are fishing a small bowl you could go narrow and it will help get rid of the blind spot. Just think of the signal as a cone and whatever part hits first comes  back and so if that point hit at ten feet but there is a deeper part say 12 ft it would be blind below 10.  hope this helps .

If you want something small and light, and you want something a little different than your traditional flashers... go with a Showdown 5.6 or 5.6 Dual beam. The vertical display is really cool, especially with it's features  ;) if you don't want the vertical display and you don't mind spending a couple extra bucks.. go with a MarCum Lx6, it is light and portable, same thing as the Lx7, just smaller. I would definitely recommend getting one of the units with the LCD screen. If you are just looking for something basic, a Vx1 or Lx3 is the best bet. You also have the Showdown Troller to. Good luck! You can't go wrong with a MarCum product     :icefish:

Another advantage to the dual beam is if your fishing in an area that has stumps or other structure you can fish close to the structure and not have a big blind spot. I can't say enough good things about the Showdown Dual Beam, if I had to do it over again I'd definitely buy another one.

Good luck with it, I'm sure you'll like it as much as I do.  When I got mine I bought a few spare fuses in case I needed one.  One thing to remember is ALWAYS plug the charger into the machine FIRST then plug the charger into the wall.  If you don't do it in this order you'll blow the fuse.  Other than that I made an index card with notes on how to change beams, and the other things that require you to push two buttons to preform.  I keep the index card and spare fuses in a zip lock bag in the case's inside pocket.

I like my friends Vex due to the crispness of the lines on the screen, I like my ICE55 due to the options that is has on it.
