Good deal on a vex?
« on: Jul 18, 2013, 06:55 PM »
I came across a guy that is getting out of ice fishing and selling all his gear, he has a vex fl8. He said he would sell it to me for $75.00
This would be a back up or a extra one for when my son or wife is with me.
So what do you guys think? Deal or no deal?
Thanks

That's a steal assuming it works.  Does he have anything else worthwhile he's getting rid of?  If he's got any tipups or shantys I might be interested.

I picked up my first flasher this year a Vexilar FL-8 SLT for 45 dollars at an auction this year.  It didn't have a battery in it at the auction so I ran home and got the battery out of my step dad's Vexilar and hooked it up it worked so I knew to get it.  Everyone else thought it didn't work.

Well there is good news and bad news on the vex I picked up today. The is that 2 years the unit wasn't showing color and not acting right. He sent it in and they sent back a brand new unit!
The bad is that he traded the transducer for one that goes on a boat :(
He said it worked just fine for the ice cause he rigged it in a way so the trans pointed down. The ones for a trolling motor the cable goes in the side of the transducer. Well I don't like the way jr is rigged so now I'm looking for a ice ducer. But all in all a good deal I guess. Anyone know how much they run for a fl8?

amazon has a 12 degree for 99.99. it may be worth it to rig up something to make the boat one work at that price

Vexilar site has them for $89-$119 ... may also want to pick up an S-cable (suppression cable) if you fish in the weeds as it cuts the units power in half and avoids a lot of the clutter on the screen

Are the open water ones as sensitive as the ice transducers? As far as separation and picking up your jig? If it will work them I will just leave it as it is, he said it does, but I just want to make sure

Should all be the same as long as it shoots straight down the hole should work just fine ...some folks glue a RV type level atop the transducer to  keep it aligned / level

Works just fine.  the ice ducer is less hassle to set up. Just pitch it in the hole.

Still a good deal I was wondering if that fl8 has a fish alarm like my old fl8 I love the old thing I use it on my dead stick rod and my fl20 on my jigging then you can use 2 vexilars at once lol
Never to many short poles
