question about eskimo wide 1
« on: Aug 18, 2013, 07:20 PM »
After it has been out for a while now. does anyone have one with some good feedback? (pros and cons) I had a otter wild cottage ( black camo) and have found that i can not drag this out to my spots because of a bad back and it weighs in at just under 100# . I have found the eskimo wide 1 really cheap and it weigh in at just under 60# so it would be a huge improvement in that aspect and in know it would be smaller but alot of the other one mans are too small for me. Also ive seen a video on the wide 1 and it looks like the skirt is open on the bottom where the tub meets the fabric... not sure how that would be with the wind?

Im just putting the feelers out there before i pull the trigger.

thanks in advance

I am getting my Eskimo wide 1 tues was just wondering what pros and cons I should know about the shelter also got the cover and tracking kit for it so the sled last longer.  I guess my main question is it comfortable? And whats the longest rod I can get away with jigging inside it?

I do not own one, but I recall some complaints of having some slack in the sides of the canvas that can interfere with the area that you have to fish.  I thought I saw some mods either on this site or youtube how to deal with them.

I too was looking at one for this season...

check out that video.  Guy came up with a great idea!

I too was contemplating 1.  But wanted to wait and hear what others had to say.
Also it only had a thermal cap.  And  to me full thermal is important.  So I was leaning towards the Jason Mitchell.

But I didn't get anything.
I do see that Clam has an expandable flipover this year again.

I will also be getting mine on tuesday as well. I found a screaming deal at one of the big stores for 250.00. i previously had the otter wild cottage and i have found that even though that one was really well built it was mega heavy. even after i made my own lightweight seat and conduit sled. this one looks like it will fit the bill for me quite well... i hope  ;D

eskimo scares me lately. i have the 949 when it came out, and first year they had defective hubs, then fixed next years version.  then i got mako 43 auger with defective gas tank, had to buy new version due to bad design.

so whats next with these guys... i love the wide 1 specs. but ill wait a few more months before i buy one to make sure they dont come out with a new version..

actually looking at the new clam genz legend flip. little more money but seems to have the bells and whistles.

Got my wide 1 today got it together and love it obviously I can't give it a test drive until ice but im very pleased with everything so far and just from sitting in it today my best guess is that a 28" rod is gonna be max for comfortable jigging . Far as the mod and reveiw thats been out there I see what he was talking about but I think if your worried about the side flapping into the heater im just gonna stretch a bungee cord vertically should solve the problem. So until we get ice I guess stay tuned any questions just ask.....

my Frabill Trekker has same deal w/skirt wide open where it meets the tub - found that when I close it off 100% that the heater fumes (monoxide) really build up inside the unit -

On my rover i put some velcro on the tub and on the bottom of the tent. It still lets a little air in but helps stop the wind.

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

I bought one last year.
I really like it. Pulls easy on snow with two augers, heater, flasher, sometimes camera too.
Seat is very comfy, removable, even though I don't remove it.  You can pull it half way and it locks.
I got it because of insulation and I usually go by myself anyway or meat up with cousin(wish sides were insulated too!) It heats up fast, buddy heater on low..wow, way warm! I shut it off after a while.  Since it goes wide, i put my holes towards the corners, that way it frees up the middle. I put the buddy heater toward front or if one hole,in a corner. Its actually not that cramped, bucket, flasher, minnow bucket, lantern (putting leds this year, don't have to drag that lantern) poles, buddy heater. My cousin has the shappel 1.0 No room, well not enough for me anyway!
I put the minnow bucket and heater in corner to leave a gap, I throw my fish up in the corner if using one hole, then the heater and bucket block them from going all over.
if I decide to move, I flip it down, put augers on top and away I go
any other questions let me know.
only pain in the but is the sliding bar in the front, im going to grind it down a little so It slides easier, mine is pretty tight

I just got one and used yesterday. Great shanty well built and a ton of room, its a lot easier to move around than my voyager. LOL. I compared it to the calm Keni at the same price. The Eskimo is built better and has more room. the new built in seat is way more comfy the the flat board clam has in the keni. Great unit I might sell the old Voyager and buy another eskimo for my son. way easier to load in the truck.

The biggest problem I had was with the  cheap plastic seat holders breaking where they attach to the seat pipe.  Every time I'd sit back in the chair it would let loose and I'd be laying in the tub.  Eskimo replaced them but after breaking the 3rd one I bought an emergency pipe seal from the hardware store and fit it to the seat. It still folds down the way it's supposed to but you cant take the seat out of the tub.  I use a bucket seat anyway when I'm out of the shack.

Plus, you can add a swivel seat base and have the swivel seat just like the inferno. The holes line up perfectly.
