through aluminum hull with transducer
« on: Mar 12, 2013, 03:49 PM »
Got an idea. If I took a peice of plastic pipe large enough around to put
my transducer in and epoxied the pipe tothe  hull and filled it with water, does
any one think it will read through the hull. It sure would be handy not having
to lug along the transducer bracket etc.

No idea if'n it'll work or not, but if you really want to try it, silicone the pvc down to the boat. That way if it doesn't work you can easily remove the pipe/experiment.  ;)

It works just like shooting through the ice. Wet the transducer and press it on a flat spot that is level to the water that isn't coated in anything heavier than paint.

I do this quite a bit in the spring looking for suspended crappies.

You can find actual instructions and epoxy kits online for a permanent instillation. I think using the proper epoxy is critical...

I'd say it should work.......... I would silicone the pipe in only in the event you wish to move it or try something else; it makes the installation semi-permanent. I know some guys have used oil filled containers but I don't think that's necessary.

I would fasten the transducer to the inside of the tube to keep it from moving around, giving a more reliable signal. Also if you can remove any air from the "container" that will remove any chance of "goofy" readings. You may find you have to turn up the gain on your unit more than normal........ Other than that, go for it.

I used to fish my aluminum boat and  would just put some water in the bottom back by the motor and lay the puck in the puddle.  Worked fine, used mostly to troll along weedlines.

If you try putting the ducer in a container full of fluid, you will loose most if not all of your return signal.

If just putting it in the puddle like buz23 says, try pushing down on it a bit.

You can use a blob of Vaseline, its what some of the yakers do. Otherwise they use 100 percent silicone to glue the transducer down -epoxies dry with air bubbles. Check out any kayaking forum and there are no shortage of posts on the subject.

It should work fine, but keep the transducer from hitting on the bottom of the boat. I had a transducer mounted on the transom of my 14' boat with a suction cup. I put about an inch of water in the back of the boat to keep the transducer wet and it worked better at high speeds than when it was mounted outside of the hull. A little clearance between the bottom of the boat and the transducer keeps the transducer from being damaged unless it is stuck down with silicone.

That is what I did and it works great.

I would always put mine in a clear container from the bait shop that leeches came in and put water in it and in the back of the boat and it shot through both and protected the ducer also instead of bouncing on the bottom of the boat.

Use some Amazing GOOP to attach that transducer. I used it to attach a transducer to a plastic kayak. Works great.

Thanks for all the replies. The reason for trying it is so I can use it in several boats with out having to make it
permanent in any one boat. Will try it and post the results. Rugermag

It should work.  I bought a special transducer from points I had at Cabelas and its secured and shoots thru the hull.

I need to know what that ducer is so I can help people from buying it my regular ice ducer burns through alum. boats all day long with a good coat of Vaseline! All fishermen should have it in there pocket?

I use my Marcum LX-3 to shoot through the bottom of my Coleman canoe.  I just dip the transducer in the pond to get it wet and then set it on a flat spot near the center of the canoe.  It works fine as long as there is a water between the transducer and the canoe bottom.  It works great trolling to find schools of fish and structure.

Give it a try before you make any permanent mounts.  You may have to experiment with different locations for best results.

You can also put the transducer in a plastic bag with water in it and set that on the bottom of the boat.

used some type of super glue and glued a 4 inch piece of plastic to center of boat. Filled it with
water and it works like a charm. Reads true and I have one in each boat.
