nh ice report
« on: Apr 03, 2013, 05:06 AM »
had business in the lakes region of nh yesterday. when i was finished i had some time to poke around so i took out the trusty gazette and started looking for boat ramp that are in the south part of the pond. i found a great little bass pond that was locked up to the ramp but the rest of the pond lost its edges. i already had my ice stuff in the car so i punched a few holes to find 14" of ice. i pulled out 3 pickeral in an hour then had to split.

if anyone is going up to that region to ice fish know this. most of the edges around the lake winni area are gone but the ice is still on alot of ponds but going quick

What's the elevation there Kevin? Weird how Plainfield has more than some areas of NH & VT .

I would LOVE to try Winni ! I've never been there myself. Only saw pictures and video of the lake. It looks gorgeous! Sounds like a trip brewing.

Winni is a little over 500' elevation average ice out is April 21. Stinson Lake in Rumney is not to far from Winni with an elevation around 1500' with much better ice. If you are looking for serious ice 3rd  Connecticut in Pittsburg much farther north and 2200' elevation. Ice fishing is done in N.H. on Lake trout lakes as of April 1st.

You should! I have fished it many times and it is worth the ride up. I want to fish Plainfield pond with you guys this weekend but I don't know if I can make it because it would because lake winnipesaukee is closer to me then Plainfield pond(3 hours) maybe I can go some day

Doesn't matter if it's on ice or open water, you need to get there at least once.
I head up during winter, spring, summer and fall and there are fish to be caught year round.
If you don't already have one, look into some sort of watercraft, be it boat, canoe or kayak and get out on the water.
The only warning I would give is to be aware of ALL the regulations for whatever body of water you fish.
NH Fish & Game doesn't fool around when it comes to enforcement and fines.

Plan for next winter and you will find out just how big the "big lake" eally is, and how small the ice fishing world really is!

Looks like about 93-95 miles from the providence area to Plainfield and 125-130 to Winni. Just a rough milage from my navionics map.

You could be right, but I google mapped it and it says it takes almost 3 hours to get to Plainfield pond, and it takes me about 2 hours, or some times 2-1/2 to get to winnipesaukee

Ya I use old school maps combined with Google street view to find the best routes with the least red lights best speed limits etc. The way I see it, 30 minutes difference isn't to bad to fish a gathering.

I just checked both again on the maps, and it is actually about the same distance both ways. I made the decision though, and I won't be coming to the gathering because I am a bit busy and I already put away the ice gear away and I am getting ready to go open water. I'm all done ice fishing for this season and I can't wait untill ice over next year. I hope next year is a great year and will be a long one. I haven't met you yet in person millbillyman but hopefully We will next year. Maybe we could meet up sometime next year and I could show you some good bass and pike waters in RI and vise versa.
