Your Gear Is Ready....How About You?
« on: Nov 16, 2013, 02:21 AM »
Y'all may wonder why I'm on here at 3AM most days. It's what I do before I head out for a jog around town. Every year we spend time and money on the latest and greatest gear. How much do we invest in ourselves?

Get some exercise before the ice gets here. Take a good brisk walk every day. Dust off the weights buried out in the garage and lift a little more than 12 oz. Ice fishing and spending long days outside in the cold are hard on the body. A little preparation makes for a much better experience on the ice.

At 63 I still do 3-4 miles most days with some stretching and a little weight work. Frankly, I'm afraid to quit. Some days it takes a good kick in the butt from my own foot to get out the door, but I'm always happy I did.  Improving your circulation really does help you stay warmer.

Wise advice.  When I see how hard it is to pull all my gear after getting in shape, I'm afraid to find out how hard it would be if I weren't in shape.

RG:  You are so right.  I tip my hat to you if you have the intestinal fortitude to run at 3 am.  Especially this time of year when the weather is getting colder.  On work days, I have to arise at 5 am, leave the house at 5:30 and don't get back home until 8:15 pm.  By the time I kiss the wife & dog it doesn't leave much time for exercise.  Three years ago I was running regularly and developed an issue with my achillies tendons that comes back every time I start jogging again.  Since then I have gained about 40 pounds and it definately affects one's propensity to want to do things.  The good news is I started a diet and am down 5 of the 40 pounds I gained--you might be giving me inspiration to get up at 4 am to exercise.  I have done lots more exploring this hunting season though as it provides more exercise than sitting in a treestand or ground blind.  Not as productive though.  I have this coming week off so hope to get my buck and then can focus on getting the ice gear ready.  I purchased a LX-5 last year and am anxious to get out there and work with it as I only had a couple of chances to use it last year.

I have been a lifetime runner and you can continue this if you use some common sense.  At 65 I can no longer run flat out 5k races and expect to feel good the next day.  Things hurt that never hurt before when I do this.  However, if you mix running with some biking, fast walking, and weights, you can feel great and keep the extra pounds under control.  In my opinion, being overweight is the enemy of your joints, particularly the knees.  Walk whenever you get the chance whether it is hunting, golf, or just a wander around the neighborhood.  During winter months snow shoeing, cross country skiing, or downhill skiing can burn off some excess pounds.  Oh, dragging the sled will do this also, but you don't want to drop dead doing it.

I hate running with a passion.  I hate cardio-workouts period.
I stopped working out in July from laziness.  I started calisthenics, weight lifting, and hiking any incline I can find three days ago to prepare for the season. I'm paying for taking a break.
Sore but determined.  Six weeks and I'll be back in shape

I hate going to the gym with a passion - always seems so pointless to bust your butt and not have anything to show for it afterwards. Lately I've been going to the YMCA, they offer free child care for up to two hours while you work out. It's been a life saver, I feel better after working out and get a break from the kids! For me the gym is a good substitute for cutting down trees or other manual labor... Now I just need to give up the buttered bagel and beer at 10:00 every night...

Thank for getting this started. I walk out to my tree stand and was soaking wet from not being in shape. Just to much going on to think of getting in to shape. It was a very good wake up call.

I ride my bike during the warm months, up to 63 miles this year. Best thing i ever did was to get back on the bike. Low impact, and i have a bike on an indoor trainer for the cold months. I need to get some weights now for the upper body.

Good to see you around Pooley. Still the best avatar around.

Unfortunately, I've had to take a short break from my routine while I deal with a kidney stone. Nasty way to make a grown man cry.

But......this too will pass  ;D

Hey RG - best of luck passing that stone!  ;)  I got my "wake-up call" last winter - hip started bugging me, sciatic nerve started in; got a total titanium hip replacement the end of July.  Best I've felt in several years.  The new hip is doing great but the real help came from the therapy, weight loss and continued exercise.  I've taken short breaks and that's a no no.  Feeling great and still losing some weight.  Looking forward to one of the best ice seasons in several years.

RG,
Sorry to hear about the kidney stone. They can be a "pain". Hope all is well with you otherwise. Let's get together when you're up to it. .

I'm hanging in there Bill. I appreciate the well wishes. I'm sure I'll be fine. I ran yesterday. Said "Damn the stone....full jog ahead!" Odd how it comes and goes. Crippling pain one minute and perfectly fine the next.

Great advice RG...most of my cardio happens during ice season...I am not a fan of the Summer...plus, I spend too much money in gas trying to follow Freddy and Shane around in the boat ;D

I don't think you have too much too worry about Shane. Ice will be here soon enough.
