Power of the Late Season Sun
« on: Mar 25, 2013, 07:32 AM »
A few observations from yesterdays outing. The lake we fished was rock solid at 8:30 Am; temps in the low 20's. They never went higher than about 37, however it was sunny the whole day. When we started the ice ranged from around four to 5.5in. Mostly black with maybe an in. white on top. By the time we came off (around 5)  the top was super soft; my spud was going in 2.2.5 " at a walking pace. In addition, every dark spot I saw (old holes etc.) were so thin a kiss from the spud went through. Needless to say, you would have stepped through any one of dozens of places. Some would have given you a wet foot, while the larger ones were man traps. I mention this because now there is snow on top hiding all these hazards. It doesn't matter how well you know a lake, or how good you heard it was yesterday; you're playing Russian Roulette. Heavily fished lakes can have hundreds (or more) of these places. Please be safe if you're still fishing!
