First Ice predictions around Kingston?
« on: Nov 11, 2013, 07:49 PM »
guessing its going to be an early year
water temps on the backlakes are around 45 right now
saw a skim of ice covering a 2 foot deep bay the other day when it went down to -5 at night earliest Ive seen it skim over
found a new long term weather forecast that I thought was pretty cool
http://www.accuweather.com/en/ca/kingston/k7l/december-weather/49556?monyr=12/1/2013

My guess is we will be able to get on the ice within a 45min drive of Kingston by Dec 17-20th and most lakes will be ready by Dec 25, Quinte by Jan 5

Your guess?

I will go with Dec 21st for the back lakes but it will be a select few, and maybe even just a bay on a lake. Last year I did a couple tours around in dec and was surprised at the difference in ice cover in lakes that were no more than 10 mins away from each other.  In one case I tried one lake where the ice was way too thin and a similar size lake 1 min away had 4 inches of good ice.  Very surprising and very scary, never assume at first ice.

depth plays a big role in how quickly a lake will freeze
the deep and shallow sides of loughbrough are a perfect example of this the shallow side will have 3 inches before the deep side freezes completely

There is a thin skein of ice over the Cataraqui this morning.  Some lakes north of Algonquin are already froze over completely (not competent ice mind you).  Im guessing if the temps keep up we will be fishing by Christmas.
Heres hoping Santa brings me 6 to 10" IOI this year!

The Cataraqui was completely frozen over north of the causeway this morning.  Heres hoping it stays!

I have fished the cataraqui in the spring and summer with very little luck.  Some guys swear by the deep pocket near the causeway and last year I seen a few guys fishing in that area.  As mentioned, the Cat is a tricky one for ice.  Lots of current in some spots that isn't really noticeable.  BE CAREFULL and pick you spots if your going to give it a try.  If you do decide to give it a whirl (and its certainly not ready yet) , Id suggest coming out of the marina on wellington and heading out 50 yards or so.  should be s deep pocket of 20 - 25 FOW there.  Just avoid the Causeway because the ice will most certainly be brittle there.

thanks, doubt I will try it, I am not a big fan of icefishing current. Besides the obvious safety issues I just dont like the pain of trying to track your lure on sonar in current.  Now if there is slack water by the marina that might be worth a shot for panfish.  I have fished the cat from shore for pannies in the spring and there were always decent numbers and size.

The water y the marina would be slack, or slack enough you wouldn't have trouble tracking your lure on sonar.  Id bet you may even get some pike and walleye in the 20 - 25 FOW zone.  Id be spudding the whole way out though.
