Homemade Flipover
« on: Mar 18, 2013, 04:20 PM »
I am planning on building my own 2 man Flipover. The sled I will be mounting it on is 54" by 26"  I will be using metal conduit for the ple with tumb tabs to hold it up.  I am very good with tools and my mom is a quilter so sewing the tent will be no problem. I will be putting reflectix in on the roof when I finish making it.

What can I use for the tent fabric?
What type of auger mounts are there for flip overs to store the auger outside the sled?
What type of heater do you use in a shack?

I just built a one flip over. I used 500 weight nylon cordura, that I got off ebay. It is waterproof. The sellers ID is taylo177. Nice product  with a good price. Cost me 34.00 for the one man. I used schedule 40 3/4" pvc pipe for my frame.

How many yards did you use to make your Flipover. I have some industrial strength thread that I will use to sew it together.

This is the fabric that I plan on using as the tent fabric.  I would get the flooded timber style so I could use it as a hunting blind too.

Did you use a regular sewing machine to stitch it together?  Did you put a zippered door in it or just flip it up to get in?  What did you use for windows?  I plan on using Velcro and some plastic fabric for the windows.  How much easier is it to pull across the snow with the skis on it?   I plan on making some skis that are collapsible so they will fold up so the sled will touch the ground and when I want to move I just have to slide them up.  If that makes sense ;)

I used a regular sewing machine. Do not need a zipper with a flip over. I have no windows,  yet. When I find the right stuff for windows I will make them. Tried it 2 weeks ago and it was too hot inside, but it was warm outside also.
Yes the smitty sled works great for moving the sled in deep snow. I put pipe runners under the sled itself for moving on ice.  Let us all know how the collapsible ski idea works out.
good luck with your project.

ljc2talll's is the nicest homemade popup I have seen. You should get some nice ideas from his build.

I will be using an Otter Wild Small sled as my base.  I may be able to get a defective voyager tent from a fellow Iceshanty member.  His name is Clunk and depending on the shipping cost he may or may not send it to me.  If he is able to send it to me I will make it to the size of my sled.

I don't know the size of your sled, but if you need more room. I used a jet sled jr. for one of my flip overs. It was to narrow and not long enough. So I added a 1x6( flat ways) around the top of the sled. Added at least 8" in width.

I got a voyager thermal tent from Clunk a fellow iceshanty member.  I have to add windows in where the logos were because Clunk had to cut them out for the warranty claim.  I will be mounting it on a Otter Wild Medium Sled.  I will have to make the canvas shorter so it fits my sled better. I will make a extension on to the back of the sled to hold 2 five gallon buckets this will not touch the snow.

I am going to order a sled from Overtons.  I will get either the wild series small sled or the pro series small sled.  Which sled should I get the pro series is ten bucks more and has a three year warranty.
