12v chargers, amp hour question
« on: Mar 06, 2013, 08:10 AM »
I have a X67c and the charger is starting to crap out. I want to hard wire in a plug so I dont have to mess with the aligator clips to charge, when I replace the charger.

I am thinking of just getting a Battery Tender Jr to replace the charger as it is about the same price, has float charge, wont over charge plus it comes with the plug to hard wire it too.

The stock charger is a 1.2 amp charger and the Battery Tender Jr is a .75amp charger. From what I have found online the only thing that will effect will be the speed at which the battery charges, correct? It will usually charge atleast overnight so not thinking that it will be a problem.

Everything I have found basically says that as long as the voltage is the same then any charger will work without problems. Just want to make sure I'm not gonna mess up the battery and/or the unit.

Thanks in advance
J-

Your thinking is correct. A dead 12v 7amp battery charging at 1.2 ah would take 5.8 hours to charge, at .75 it will take 9.3 hours. I've always heard slower charge is better.

I use the heck out of my batter tender jr.  I have nothing but great things to say about.  It does charge faster but after my first complete ice season with it I have not noticed any drop in capacity on my batteries.  Note that the thing I got to hard wire was designed to be connected to a nut and bolt terminal.  I use it for this purpose on a larger spotlight battery, but if I a guy were going to put this on a 7 or 9 amp battery some modification might be needed.  That is unless they changed this recently....

love my jr. Works like a charm. I use my marcum for 3 hours and it takes 1.5 to recharge.

It comes with two sets of plugs. One with alligator clips and one with rings. I took the one with rings and cut the rings off and attached piggy-back spade connectors on it. I hook them to the battery, and then the marcum's power to the top of the chargers spade. Then I tuck the cord into the case (its only about a foot long to start with). Plug and charge, unplug to go fishing. I left the alligator clip ones alone so I can charge other batteries also.
