Great job as usual, but I have to ask what is the idea with the bobber under the tip-up, that is a new one on me.

I have been getting a lot of questions about this one.  The "Theory" is that we weight the live minnow down with a 1/4 to 1/2 ounce sinker and bobber up top to keep the live minnow exactly 1 foot off the bottom.  This allows the little fellow swim around on the bottom in circles but not up or down after he gets tired out.  Again... All theory!!!

It will only take one lost monster pike for that theory to be thrown out the window. But I'm sure it works for you so have at it.

It has produced a 44" 24lb'er and numerous 15lb'ers this season.  Understand your thoughts.

Doesn't sound too bad, but how's that different than setting it weighted right off the trap?

The tipups we are using are Hookset Tipups.  They will not trigger unless they pull sideways.  We experimented with live bate and this was the only way we could get the desired outcome.  They will not trigger if the fish or minnow pull down, they will only unspool.  So we thought up a way to keep a tight line for a minnow but not a monster pike and still have the hookset do its job.  Its all highly scientific and very controversial! :)

We use bobbers and a sinker as well, a little smaller but same theory. Also, If we get a false trip or when it gets set off we know that reeling up to the bobber means we are a foot off the bottom every time and speeds things up when re-setting. We've also landed 23# pike, numerous 15#-20# range, and a 12.5# walleye last week.

That is one issue I have with Peck. Folks will run one tip up on each point and think they own all the spots for a mile or two! ::)

I have no problem setting around a lone tip up... ;D

Problem was is that it wasn't the only one on that point and they set up within 20 ft of the tipup and said they didn't know it was there.

No big deal.

I don't know this entire situation and won't claim to.  But, I've dealt with people who set a few and check them once a day and piss and moan that I'm 100' away.  That's crap, a few traps do not claim a point or any other public waters, 20' is closer than I would even set mine apart but you have no gripe.
