I have never seen that personally, but I have seen some pictures of some lakers that make you wonder how they could swim. I would guess its from predation at a young age.

Yep. Myxobolus cerebralis commonly called whirling disease. Common in lakers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myxobolus_cerebralis

I've seen this in walleye, pike, and perch.  Presumably, it's the result of being attacked by predators when the fish were younger.  It's amazing how they are able to survive like that.  Nice trout!
