Red River is one hell of a fishery... typical fishing day on the red river..
master goldeye ,no stop sauger action and smashing walleyes...
if you head out to the red river make sure your 4x4 works cause the slush was deep where we were.

good thing we had the heavy boys with us to do alittle pushing (thanks guys you were our 4x4)

Somebody told me today that you shouldn't eat anything that comes from the Red. Is there any truth to this?

Way to go mikeypikey & gang, those are dandy looking fish.
It's nice to get into mixed species, you never know for sure what the next one will be. :)

I can see why the are called greenbacks in the Red, very unique looking walleyes.
I have never seen anyone catch goldeye while ice fishing, neat to see it can be done. @)

Nice pictures! I am envious as most of my ice fishing this season is the "couch" variety on my laptop due to time constraints. Judging from the pictures it looks like you guys are set up at the north end of a popular fall spot for Walleyes.

Somebody told me today that you shouldn't eat anything that comes from the Red. Is there any truth to this?
This was told to when I was young too. But the truth is the red river flows in to lake Wpg and most fish come from the lake and breed and feed in the red river , then go bad to lake. So most fish are from the Big lake.
So reality it not much different river fish and lake fish, it's the same waters, red river drains in to lake Wpg ..so someone who says I rather eat a lake Wpg walleye over a red river walleye is not educated in fundamentals of drainage basin of lake Wpg.. The red river is a natural muddy water cause of a soft muddy bottom and steep elevation with make the river to have high currents which stirs the mud around.  Just cause the water is no clear , doesn't mean it's polluted .. There lots of nutrients in the red river that's way it's such a good fishery... .. I could type and type about this ( should of not started this convo. lol, but get that all the time..ewww you eat fish from the river) ,
This is my OPINION!!  I will and do eat fish from the RED RIVER.. Hope this makes sense tired and had a few lol...

Two questions I ask people when they ask me if I eat fish from the Red.

First Question is do you buy fish from Gimli Fish market?  If I get a yes I explain that they come from Lake Winnipeg which the Red flows into.

The other question is do you swim at Grand Beach?
Early to bed,
Early to rise!
Fish all day,
and make up lies!

Steam plant is about 1km from east Selkirk bridge. Can't miss it, 150ft steam stack. And about 50 shacks on the ice at the 'S' bend

Also kown as CIL. The past 3 winters it has  been awesome on the corner where Mikey was. We have put our our shack their on 17.5 fow and have had fine fishin 90% of the time. We have caught sauger, greenies, burbot, even the odd cat and 2 really rare sturgeon!! Red River.....best place to fish 365.
a bad day fishing is better than the best day at work..unless you fish for a living.
