Clam insulated 4 man pop up
« on: Dec 19, 2012, 04:09 AM »
Looking to buy a insulated pop up ,heard they need less heat to keep it warm inside  ,but the draw back is they are not dark inside.
Do not realy see a draw back with that as I use a underwater camera .
does anyone have one and how do you like it .

Bigfoot XL4000T from Clam Corp! I love mine so far, it works great in the yard anyway!

It's insulated, and I had the heater in there when I took this picture. Was about 25f outside and in about 5 minutes it was t-shirt weather inside. It's freaking huge! but yes, if it being dark is a requirement, this one won't fill that bill.

I just got a 4000T also. Has anyone ever put a floor in it?  I was thinking of foam squares. Any Ideas? Thanks

The hubs snap out and stay there pretty good. None of the brands or models I have looked at have locking hubs, so I'm curious what you are asking? You don't need the hubs to lock you just tie them down, which even if the hubs locked rigid you would have to do.

I was in some stupid wind this weekend with my Clam hub, like 50 mph winds and it held up perfect. I anchored all 4 sides out.

Did you use the little ropes that came with it?  I see other posts where they are using ratchit straps.

Yeah, I used ratchet straps and ice climbing screws. Easier to use the ratchet straps and I already had the ice screws. The shanty comes with 4 ice anchors, but I use them for the 4 tie downs inside the shelter. It really should come with 8 of the anchors, 4 for inside the shanty and 4 for outside. I suggest getting another 4 anchors and using ratchet or cam straps (can straps are my choice, lighter).

I have the Big Foot 4000, Living in the land of the wind I havent had a problem with mine other than its a lot easier to fold up and rebag with two guys instead of one. But I haven't anchored mine down yet this year, I just pile snow up around the edges and start fishing

We took ours out for the 1 st. time. Worked great! We used the ratchet straps and it didnt move a bit when the wind picked up. Picked up some foam floor mats and layed them on the ice. Only problem is the little buddy heated the roof area no problem ( mid 70's) but you could see your breath near the floor even with the mats on the ice.  I had the heater on the floor. I think the fan/light combo may help, got to get one and see. Push the warm air back down should help.

being a bit heavier the insulated material doesn't seem to flap in the wind as much as my non-insulated one.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll get one!

I noticed that also. When it pops its tight and no flapping at all from mine.  It can be a bit of a chore to get it back in the bag but I found that you stick a small bungee cord in your pocket first, gather up the tent then wrap the bungee around it. It works awesome, taming the beast  ;D Over all I like the hut a lot
